Designing Loincloth Weaving Patterns Inspired by the Identity Natural Color Palette of “Thung Kula Rong Hai”

Fieldwork and natural-dye experiments with Ban Roi Rak weavers developed white, yellow, brown, green and blue place-based colors before three experts evaluated prototypes.

01

Key findings

  • Eight loincloth pattern forms were identified. Core colors were undyed white and Terminalia yellow; secondary colors were Pterocarpus brown, Terminalia-indigo green and indigo blue. Glorious Thung Kula scored 4.40, SD 0.40.
02

Why this matters globally

A place-based palette connects ecology, memory and contemporary design, while sustainability must include material sourcing, water and labor.

03

Thai researcher contribution

A Dhurakij Pundit University researcher worked with a Roi Et weaving enterprise and Thung Kula Rong Hai dye knowledge.

04

Limitations to consider

Three experts are insufficient for broad claims. There was no blind comparison, consumer testing, sales or income baseline, or environmental life-cycle assessment.
