Using Camera Trapping to Assess the Status of the Mammalian Community in the Mafou Fully Protected Area, Upper Niger National Park (Guinea)

During the January-May 2025 dry season, 53 cameras sampled the Mafou Fully Protected Area in Guinea for 4,239 camera-days. They yielded 10,334 usable files and 2,634 independent detections, documenting 30 taxa from 15 families and five orders, including six species of conservation concern. The assemblage included prey, mesopredators and apex predators, despite a notable human-activity index.

01

Key findings

  • The survey documented 30 taxa in 2,634 independent detections. • Six recorded species were of IUCN conservation concern. • Some occupancy patterns appeared sensitive to human disturbance.
02

Why this matters globally

The baseline supports monitoring and conservation planning in a poorly documented but important West African park.

03

Thai researcher contribution

The record links an author to Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, indicating cross-regional conservation participation; the full paper should confirm the role.

04

Limitations to consider

Dry-season, trail-targeted sampling focused on mammals above 0.5 kg and may miss small, seasonal or camera-averse species.
