Specialised stock market terminology is essential for learners of English as a foreign or second language to comprehend investment-related contexts. However, many learners struggle with the dense, polysemous nature of financial discourse, and existing business word lists often lack the specific disciplinary focus required to address this challenge. To bridge this pedagogical gap, this study develops the Global Stock Market Word List (GSMWL) to facilitate effective communication for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learners in investment settings. The corpus was compiled from six financial news websites—CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Seeking Alpha, Bloomberg, and Barron’s—containing a total of 10,894,720 tokens. The procedure for developing the GSMWL involved keyword analysis, lexical profiling, semantic tagging using the UCREL Semantic Analysis System, dictionary consultation, and concordance line analysis. As a result, a total of 486 words were identified and categorised into three groups: technical, semi-technical, and supportive. While several business, finance, and economics word lists already exist, they generally provide broad disciplinary coverage and do not focus specifically on stock market discourse. The GSMWL addresses this gap by offering a novel, corpus-driven lexical resource derived exclusively from stock market texts through keyword-based analysis. The finding serves as a practical resource for researchers, students, and instructors of ESP, particularly in Business English, as well as EFL/ESL learners and practitioners interested in stock market investment contexts.
