ABSTRACT Feature selection plays a critical role in developing intelligent systems for large-scale, heterogeneous, and human-centered data, where interpretability and robustness are as important as predictive performance. However, conventional optimization-based feature-selection methods often face limitations when handling high-dimensional binary data, complex feature interdependencies, and nonlinear socioeconomic structures. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel Adaptive Chaotic Binary Grey Wolf Optimization-based Feature Selection framework (ACBGWO-FS) for interpretable modeling of large-scale socioeconomic systems. The main novelty of the proposed framework lies in the integration of three complementary mechanisms: binary feature-mask encoding for discrete socioeconomic indicators, logistic chaotic mapping for enhancing population diversity and avoiding local optima, and adaptive coefficient control for balancing exploration and exploitation during optimization. The proposed framework was evaluated using a nationally representative dataset comprising 52,432 Thai households described by 45 binary socioeconomic indicators and classified across three Poverty Operating Models: Local Content Economy, Pro-poor Value Chain, and Social Safety Net. ACBGWO-FS was benchmarked against seven competitive binary metaheuristic feature-selection algorithms under a unified experimental protocol. Experimental results show that ACBGWO-FS achieved the highest classification accuracy of 94.9236% while selecting a compact and stable subset of 18.3333 features on average. The selected features highlighted interpretable socioeconomic dimensions related to education participation, income grouping, occupational indicators, and welfare access. These findings demonstrate that the proposed adaptive-chaotic feature-selection framework can improve predictive performance while preserving feature compactness and interpretability. Overall, ACBGWO-FS provides a robust, transparent, and generalizable methodological foundation for intelligent-system applications involving high-dimensional binary socioeconomic data.
