Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) has been utilized for monitoring bladder volume by reconstructing the conductivity distribution of the lower body. While time-difference EIT (tdEIT) with a commonly used single-plane electrode layout demonstrates overall conductivity changes in response to volume variations, accurately localizing the change within the bladder region remains inaccurate. Furthermore, body movements during long-term monitoring significantly degrade performance. In this study, a novel double-plane layout is proposed for use with the time–frequency-difference EIT (tfdEIT) method. The proposed layout significantly increases measurement sensitivity, particularly within the bladder region, while tfdEIT utilizes frequency-dependent contrast to provide images that are significantly more resilient to motion artifacts. Additionally, a region of interest (ROI) identification strategy is proposed, utilizing frequency-difference images to eliminate unrelated artifacts. The investigation was performed via numerical simulations and human trials involving seven subjects across nine sessions. The proposed layout and method successfully imaged bladder changes in 100 % of cases with minimal artifacts. The Rate of Conductivity Change ( RoCC ) was consistent among subjects, yielding a coefficient of variation ( CV ) of ∼ 36 %. This represents a reduction by a factor of 2–5 compared to other methods, indicating significantly improved consistency. Finally, the study demonstrates that reconstruction models must incorporate pelvic bone geometry to achieve accurate localization of bladder variations.
