Age and contact status influence the probability of disease treatment between adjacent hutch calves within a commercial calf ranch

Objective: To determine the probability of treatment within 12 days of an adjacent calf being treated for diarrhea or respiratory disease. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at a commercial calf ranch from March 21, 2024, through February 11, 2025. Electronic identification and hutch location were linked to daily health records. Calves treated for diarrhea or respiratory disease without an adjacent calf treated in the previous 12 days were classified as "noncontact," whereas calves with an adjacent treated calf were classified as "contact." Generalized linear mixed models estimated the daily probability of treatment for both diseases by contact status, age categories, and potential interactions, including calf identification as a random effect. Results: Records were collected for 9,756 calves initially. The daily probability of treatment was significantly affected by interaction between contact status and age. Calves < 30 (vs ≥ 30) days old had a significantly higher probability of diarrhea treatment. For respiratory disease, contact calves had a significantly higher probability of treatment within each age group, although magnitude of difference varied by age. Conclusions: Treatment probability increased with adjacent cases within 12 days and varied by calf age and disease. Clinical Relevance: These findings indicate that proximity between hutches may influence disease and should be considered in management strategies, such as having greater space between hutches or removing sick calves to reduce exposure to adjacent calves.
