Introduction Current piano pedagogy in higher education has not adequately integrated jazz improvisation with classical technique to foster musical creativity. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an integrated pedagogical model combining jazz and classical piano approaches to support creativity among undergraduate music education students. Methods A qualitative single-case study was conducted with 64 undergraduate music education students at a public university in Guangdong, China. Data were generated through students' written reflections, semi-structured interviews conducted one month after the intervention, and focus group discussions exploring shared learning experiences. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results The findings identified three interrelated dimensions of musical creativity: cognitive-creative, reflected in expanded musical understanding and critical interpretation; exploratory-musical, reflected in improvisation, experimentation, and expressive flexibility; and reflective-contextual, reflected in heightened self-awareness and interpretive consciousness. Authentic performance experiences, structured feedback, and collaborative reflection supported the development of these dimensions, whereas performance anxiety and inconsistent participation constrained them. Discussion These findings suggest that an integrated jazz-classical pedagogical model provides a productive framework for linking technical proficiency with creative development in undergraduate music education. The study highlights the pedagogical value of combining structured rehearsal, improvisational practice, and critical reflection in fostering students' musical creativity.
