This study explores the cross-border employability skills required for Chinese students seeking employment in Thai–Chinese business contexts and examines the educational practices and approaches used by Thai universities to support cross-border employability development. A qualitative research design was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with 30 Chinese employees and executives from five Thai–Chinese companies, as well as 25 university administrators and lecturers from five Thai higher education institutions. The findings indicate that language proficiency, cross-cultural adaptability, communication ability and professional knowledge were the most frequently emphasized competencies for cross-border employment. Participants also identified gaps between university training and workplace expectations, particularly in practical communication, intercultural interaction and workplace readiness. While universities have introduced internships, multilingual programs and industry collaboration initiatives, several institutional challenges remain, including limited industry experience among faculty members and insufficient intercultural support systems. The findings provide practical implications for higher education institutions, employers and policymakers seeking to strengthen cross-border employability development in ASEAN-related labor market contexts.
