Halal-oriented behaviour and smart tourism adoption in an ecologically sensitive plateau environment: a structural model of Indonesian tourist intention

Information from the abstract

Environmentally sensitive plateau destinations require integrated tourism strategies that balance environmental sustainability, religious values, and technological innovation. However, previous studies have largely examined halal tourism, smart tourism, and plateau tourism separately. This study develops and validates an integrated behavioural model explaining tourists’ visit intention towards the Dieng Plateau, Indonesia. A quantitative survey of 217 respondents was analysed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modelling (SEM) with SPSS and AMOS. The findings show that religious commitment significantly enhances environmental concern and social influence, while environmental concern positively influences social influence. Social influence is the strongest predictor of visit intention and also significantly increases the perceived ease of using AI. In contrast, environmental concern does not significantly affect the perceived ease of using AI, and the perceived ease of use of AI does not significantly influence visit intention. The study contributes by integrating halal tourism, smart tourism, and plateau tourism into a unified behavioural framework that explains tourist behaviour in ecologically sensitive destinations. Practically, destination managers should prioritize halal-orientated services, environmental stewardship, and community-based communication, while positioning AI as a supporting tool for real-time information, travel guidance, and environmental risk communication rather than as the primary driver of destination choice.
