Aureobasidium musti C. Onetto, S. Schmidt, M. Roach & A. Borneman ex Jumbam & Aime, Persoonia 54: 179 (2025) Fig. 17 Cultural characteristics. After 14 days of incubation at 25 ° C in the dark, colonies on PDA reaching 59–67 mm diam., surface flat, spreading with filiform, entire margin, velvety, shiny, reddish white (10 A 2); on MEA reaching 50–57 mm diam., surface flat, round with radiating, filamentous, gradient from pale yellow (2 A 3), light yellow (2 A 5) and yellow (2 A 8); on OA 60–67 mm diam., surface flat, spreading with entire margin, velvety, shiny, reddish white (10 A 2). Description. Anamorph in vitro dematiaceous hyphomycetes. Vegetative hyphae (2.4 –) 3.0–8.0 (– 11.1) μm wide, hyaline to brown, becoming dark brown with age, branched, septate, smooth, thin-walled, getting darker and thicker with age, constricted at the septa. Conidiogenous cells (9.0 –) 9.8–14.0 (– 20.5) × (3.6 –) 4.5–6.5 (– 7.2) μm (x ̄ = 12.4 × 5.4 μm, n = 20), undifferentiated, intercalary, terminal, producing conidia percurrently from indistinct, short lateral denticles, giving rise to conidia that aggregate in a mucoid mass, or differentiated on hyphae, hyaline to dark brown. Conidia obovoid to ellipsoidal, or elongated, hyaline to light brown, aseptate, occasionally with an indistinct truncated base and a hilum, smooth-walled, guttulate, (4.5 –) 5.5–9.2 (– 10.7) × (2.3 –) 2.6–4.5 (– 4.8) μm (x ̄ = 7.6 × 3.7 μm, n = 150). Chlamydospores (6.2 –) 7.6–10.2 (– 11.6) (x ̄ = 8.7 μm, n = 25) µm wide, produced in aerial hyphae, mostly intercalary, solitary or in branched chains, subglobose, brown, smooth-, thick-walled, septate, constricted near the septa. Endoconidia (3.4 –) 4.3–7.2 × 2.6–3.9 (– 4.8) μm (x ̄ = 5.6 × 3.4 μm, n = 30), obovoid to ellipsoidal, hyaline, occasionally seen in intercalary hyphal cells. Cardinal temperatures for growth. Minimum 4 ° C, optimum in the range of 25 ° C to 30 ° C, maximum 37 ° C. Strains examined. THAILAND • Chiang Mai Province, Mueang District, Chang Phueak, isolated from confederate vine flower (Antigonon leptopus; Polygonaceae, Caryophyllales), Jul 2024, P. Kodchasee, C. Senwanna, J. Kumla and N. Suwannarach, living culture = SDBR-CMU 825, Suthep, isolated from white cheesewood flower (Alstonia scholaris; Apocynaceae, Gentianales), Sep 2024, P. Kodchasee, C. Senwanna, J. Kumla and N. Suwannarach, living culture = SDBR-CMU 864. Habitat and distribution. Flowers of Alstonia scholaris and Antigonon leptopus in Thailand (this study); endophyte from pine needles, isolated from a bird feather, the phylloplanes of Cyrtomium falcatum, Lygodium japonicum, and Oryza sativa, and an unidentified phylloplane in the USA (Jumbam et al. 2025); Shiraz grape juice in Australia (Jumbam et al. 2025). Notes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strains SDBR-CMU 825 and SDBR-CMU 864 grouped in the same clade as A. musti and formed a sister clade to A. chiangmaiense (Fig. 2). The ITS and LSU sequences of both strains were identical (100 % similarity) to those of A. musti NRRL 64173 (ex-type). Additionally, the morphological characteristics of SDBR-CMU 825 and SDBR-CMU 864 are similar to those of A. musti. Thus, SDBR-CMU 825 and SDBR-CMU 864 were identified as A. musti based on combined morphological and phylogenetic evidence. The differences in molecular data, morphological characteristics, and physiological traits between A. musti and A. chiangmaiense have been described above. This is the first report of A. musti in Thailand.
