Introduction This study examines how environmental knowledge, habit, and social influence shape sustainable consumption behavior among sport tourists. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and the Knowledge-Attitude-Behavior model, it further investigates environmental self-efficacy as a mediator and green facility quality as a moderator. Methods A cross-sectional survey using multistage quota sampling collected on-site and online data from non-local spectators who traveled to Beijing, China, for basketball events. After screening, 678 valid responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results Environmental knowledge and habit directly and positively predicted sustainable consumption behavior, whereas social influence had no significant direct effect. All three antecedents significantly strengthened environmental self-efficacy, which was the strongest predictor of sustainable consumption behavior and mediated their effects. Green facility quality positively moderated the relationship between environmental self-efficacy and sustainable consumption behavior. Attendance frequency produced a small negative control effect. Discussion Sustainable consumption among sport tourists is jointly shaped by knowledge, habitual experience, efficacy beliefs, and enabling venue infrastructure. The findings identify environmental self-efficacy as the central mechanism converting individual and social influences into sustainable action. Sport-event organizers should strengthen spectators' environmental capabilities while providing accessible, understandable, and supportive green facilities.
