On December 21, 2010, a large normal-faulting earthquake (M w 7.4) occurred off the Bonin Islands, generating a tsunami that propagated across the Pacific Ocean and reached Japan. Tsunami signals were recorded using Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) stations and tide-gauges. Although the tsunami records of the 2010 Bonin earthquake were moderate, regional tide gauges recorded an unexpected phenomenon of locally amplified and dominant long tsunami oscillations (i.e., lasting more than 9 h) in western Japan. This study aims to clarify the long tsunami oscillations dominating western Japan by analyzing tsunami spectra and performing numerical modeling. Spectral analysis of the 2010 Bonin tsunami reveals that the coastal oscillations observed in western Japan are mainly characterized by a wave period range of 4.1–60.0 min, generated by the tsunami source wave periods of 4.9–12.6 min. Longer wave periods exceeding 14.1 min, such as those observed at the Tosashimizu, Muroto, Gobo, Kushimoto, Kumano, and Owase gauges, were most likely associated with the presence of shelf edge waves and resonance. Numerical modeling indicates notable tsunami oscillations not only in the western Japan region but also along the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc, influenced by energy-trapping mechanisms and waveguides formed by shallow shelves along the propagation paths. Additionally, our heatmap analysis of tsunami nonlinearity quantified that the representation of land-sea boundary and bottom-friction controls have a non-negligible influence on long-term tsunami forecasts.
