Abstract Climate change strongly influences animal diseases and strongly affects the transmission and epidemiology of viral diseases of cattle, such as Lumpy skin disease (LSD). However, there have been limited studies on LSD, weather variables, and climate changefrom the first outbreak and its subsequent epidemics in Thailand. This study aimed to compare the number of LSD outbreaks in beef cattle and dairy cattle for each region (central, eastern, northeastern, northern, southern and western regions) and also evaluate the possible reasons contributing to the ongoing LSD outbreaks and climatic time series (humidity and max–min temperature (T-max, T-min) from 2021 to 2024. LSD outbreaks in cattle farming areas have been reported in 69 of the 77provinces. Two hundred ninety cattle farms and 15 dairy farms were affected by the outbreak(s). The highest mortality rate(%) of LSD in beef cattle by region since outbreak was northeastern (0.13%), central (0.02%), northern (0.017%), western (0.012%), eastern (0.007%) and southern (0.003%), respectively. While the highest mortality rate(%) of LSD in dairy ranging by regions since outbreak is northern (0.03%), western (0.008%), central (0.004%), and northeast (0.0036%), respectively. The number of mortalities, and mortality(%) of beef cattle during the rainy season were higher than those during the summerand winter. In dairy, mortalities, attack rate(%), and mortality rate(%) in rainy was significantly higher than that in summer and winter. The T-max in 2024 (33.70 ± 2.73 °C) was significantly increasing from 2021 (32.71 ± 2.38 °C), 2022 (32.51 ± 2.08 °C), and 2023 (33.38 ± 2.57 °C) at p < 0.05. Interestingly, the THI index also showed an increasing trend since 2021 (79.06), 2022 (79.13), 2023 (79.82), and 2024 (80.43) respectively. Additionally, the THI indices all regions were higher than 78 which indicates significant heat stresson cattle. The morbidity of beef cattle was significantly and moderately correlatedwith the humidity ( r = − 0.31), T-min ( r = 0.38) and T-max ( r = 0.35) at p < 0.05, while the morbidity of dairy was significantly and strongly correlatedwith T-max ( r = 0.6) at p < 0.05. This study reveals weather variables and climatic influences on LSD outbreaks in Thailand. These findings provide important sinsights into the disease’s dynamics and can be used to implement effective LSD, vector control, and prevention methods to reduce the disease’s spread to other regions of Thailand.
