The Process of Forgetting – the Enemy of Foreign Language Learning

Forgetting is a natural cognitive function of the human brain that permeates all areas, including foreign language teaching. This article presents methods for constructively integrating forgetting into vocabulary training in the classroom. This is done primarily against the backdrop that systematic vocabulary training in the classroom is often underestimated. In this context, so- called ‘high frequency words’ play an important role and can serve as guidelines for teachers. Careful selection of these words is essential to guarantee learning success. Through repetition, the use of vocabulary cards, contextualisation and the targeted use of digital learning games, teachers can counteract forgetting while simultaneously strengthening learners’ command of high-frequency vocabulary. In doing so, they make productive use of the forgetting process.
