Metalycaeus Pilsbry, 1900 Alycæus (Metalycæus) Pilsbry, 1900: 382. Metalycaeus – Páll-Gergely et al. 2020 d: 137 –138. Páll-Gergely et al. 2021: 45. Gittenberger et al. 2024: 190. Type species. Alycaeus (Metalycaeus) melanopoma Pilsbry, 1900 (synonym of Alycaeus nipponensis Reinhardt, 1877, see Minato 1988), by subsequent designation (Thiele 1929). Remarks. This genus is diagnosed by the presence of spiral striation on both the protoconch and teleoconch. However, there is at least one species, M. pygmachos Páll-Gergely & Hunyadi, 2021 from Myanmar, lacking spiral striation on the entire shell, but this species is assigned to Metalycaeus based on its large size and the depressed swelling on R 3. Therefore, the lack of spiral striation on the protoconch is deemed a secondary reduction, and it is necessary to consider other shell characters in order to classify the specimens into Metalycaeus. At present, there are 70 species of Metalycaeus known from southeastern Himalaya to the south of Honshu Island, Japan, the northern islands of the Philippines, northern Laos and Vietnam, and central Thailand (Páll-Gergely et al. 2020 d, 2021; Gittenberger et al. 2024).
