Information from the abstract

The global manufacturing sector, particularly the food and beverage industry, continues to contribute to environmental degradation, posing risks to long-term sustainability. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face both challenges and opportunities in improving operations to deliver positive social and environmental outcomes. This study examines the influence of stakeholder salience on SMEs’ engagement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the effect of CSR on sustainable performance (SP) through green innovation (GI). Data were collected from 133 food and beverage manufacturing SMEs registered with Thailand’s Department of Business Development in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Thailand, using purposive sampling and an email-based questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess measurement validity and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. Based on the results, stakeholder salience—particularly regarding suppliers, government, and environmental concerns—significantly promoted CSR engagement. Furthermore, CSR enhanced SP both directly and indirectly through GI. These findings underscore the strategic role of stakeholder salience in driving CSR and fostering GI, thereby enabling SMEs to achieve long-term sustainable performance. This study contributes to the entrepreneurship literature by identifying a critical boundary condition where resource constraints in SMEs lead to trade-offs between stakeholder demands and CSR implementation.
