Information from the abstract
The purposes of this study were to: 1) examine Thai undergraduate English majors' English communication competence, and 2) validate the constructs of this competence using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The sample consisted of 300 undergraduate students who completed a 22-item, 5-point Likert-type scale questionnaire. The instrument demonstrated strong validity and reliability. The second-order CFA was carried out to validate the proposed six-factor model. Results indicated that participants felt competent at communicating in English. All six competences, namely grammatical, strategic, socio-linguistic, discourse, cognitive, and attitude, formed part of the general construct, as demonstrated by a good model fit to the data. The validated model has practical applications for diagnosing communication competence in EFL, planning development strategies, and designing curricula.
