Conventional academic and policy narratives have largely framed Thailand and Northeast India as instrumental “corridors” within India’s Act East Policy and its engagement with Southeast Asia. This article challenges that conduit-centric imagination and argues for reconceptualizing both Northeast India and Thailand as relational centralities in the India–Thailand bilateral framework. Drawing on cross-national fieldwork conducted between November 2025 and January 2026, the article argues that durable economic cooperation is embedded in historically constituted identities, cultural affinities, and trust networks rather than infrastructure alone. It highlights shared Tai ethnic linkages and civilizational connections as underutilized relational assets capable of fostering socially grounded and resilient sub-regional value chains. The analysis also identifies structural constraints, including securitized governance in Northeast India, instability in Myanmar, and institutional limitations within ASEAN, and consequently provides policy suggestions to ameliorate the same. The article concludes that centrality is relational rather than geographic, and that repositioning Northeast India and Thailand as active agents can enable a more sustainable and strategically balanced bilateral partnership.
