Crude extracts from four Zingiberaceae species were investigated for their antifungal activity against Paramarasmius palmivorus, a phytopathogenic fungus affecting a wide range of economically important crops. Ethanolic extracts of Alpinia galanga, Boesenbergia rotunda, Curcuma longa, and Zingiber officinale were prepared by maceration and tested in vitro using the poisoned food technique. Ten-fold serial dilutions of each extract (100,000–10 ppm) produced concentration-dependent inhibition of mycelial growth. Among the four species, B. rotunda exhibited the greatest antifungal activity, completely inhibiting mycelial growth at 100,000 ppm and resulting in significantly lower mycelial growth than the other extracts at the higher concentrations tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the B. rotunda extract was 25,000 ppm. In comparison, C. longa and Z. officinale exhibited moderate antifungal activity, whereas A. galanga showed the weakest inhibitory effect. Although B. rotunda was the most effective crude extract evaluated, the relatively high concentration required for complete inhibition indicates that further optimisation of extraction methods and formulations, together with validation under greenhouse and field conditions, is required before practical agricultural application can be considered.
