Information from the abstract

This study investigated the synthesis, characterization, and optimization of active compounds comprising activated carbon (AC), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), and bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) using a simplex-lattice mixture design. The effects of component proportions on methylene blue (MB) adsorption and photocatalytic performance under visible-light irradiation were systematically evaluated, and the active compounds were subsequently immobilized on kraft paper to produce functional coated papers. Overall MB removal was strongly influenced by the adsorption capacity of AC, whereas Bi 2 WO 6 contributed predominantly to photocatalytic degradation after the adsorption stage. Among the experimentally prepared formulations, A1T1B1, containing AC, TiO 2 , and Bi 2 WO 6 at an equal mass ratio (1:1:1), provided the most balanced combination of functional and physicochemical properties. A1T1B1 exhibited a BET surface area of 249 m 2 /g and a hierarchical micro–mesoporous structure, with 66.9% of the pore volume distributed within the 2–10 nm range. The active compound achieved 99.61% overall MB removal, while the corresponding functional coated paper achieved 81.00% removal after immobilization. The high overall performance was primarily associated with the strong adsorption contribution of AC together with the additional visible-light-responsive photocatalytic functionality provided by the semiconductor components. Notably, the A1T1B1-coated paper outperformed the AC-only coated paper, demonstrating the benefit of balancing the three components after immobilization. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of mixture-design optimization for developing multifunctional paper-based materials combining adsorption and visible-light-responsive photocatalytic functionality, with potential applications in environmental remediation and active packaging.
