Information from the abstract
Water stress at the start of sugarcane development is a significant contributor to lower productivity. Information on the responses and diurnal patterns of drought avoidance and susceptible sugarcane genotypes can help explain avoidance mechanisms and improve survival under drought conditions. A 2 × 2 factorial in a completely randomized block design with four replications was used. Sugarcane genotypes: KK3 (drought avoidance) and UT12 (drought susceptible) were assigned as factor A. Two water regime managements: field capacity (FC) and drought of early growth stage treatments (DE) were assigned as factor B . Stomatal conductance (g s ), transpiration rate ( E ), net photosynthetic rate (P N ), water use efficiency (WUE), photosystem II photochemistry under natural light (ΔF/Fm′) condition, maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and drought tolerant index (DTI) of P N and WUE were measured diurnal at drought period. In addition, green leaf number and dry matter were collected during early drought conditions. The response and diurnal patterns of physiological traits under early dehydration period have maximum increased values in g s , E , P N , and WUE before noon, after that gradually drop during sunset in drought avoidance and susceptible genotypes. Conversely, the ΔF/Fm′ diurnal pattern of two sugarcane genotypes have optimum declined during 10.00–14.00, after that there continued increased until sundown. Moreover, a drought susceptible sugarcane genotype revealed the most reducing Fv/Fm on 14.00, after that increased until 18.00; in contrast, a drought avoidant sugarcane genotype maintained stable Fv/Fm of whole day long or increased in sometime under water stress conditions. The mechanism of drought avoidant sugarcane genotypes has fast reduction of all physiological traits but remains stable with Fv/Fm for survival to support growth and dry matter under drought at early sugarcane growth stage.
