Objectives This study aimed to examine factors associated with loneliness among Indonesian youth and to provide recent empirical evidence on its prevalence and correlates. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in January 2026 among 620 purposively sampled university students aged 18 to 24 years across five cities in Indonesia. Loneliness was measured using the Indonesian version of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, alongside assessments of depression, sleep quality, mindfulness, and self-care, as well as family-related factors including mental health history, financial hardship, parental divorce, and perceived family support. Binary logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with loneliness. Results Loneliness was highly prevalent, with most participants reporting at least moderate levels. Several variables emerged as significant independent predictors. Youth with depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 ≥ 5) had markedly higher odds of loneliness than those without depressive symptoms (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 2.749, P < 0.001). Poor self-care in supportive relationships (AOR = 2.564, P < 0.001) and poor mindfulness awareness (AOR = 2.305, P < 0.001) were also strongly associated with increased odds of loneliness. Among family-related factors, parental divorce (AOR = 1.975, P = 0.019), exposure to domestic violence (AOR = 1.646, P = 0.035), and family financial hardship (AOR = 1.497, P = 0.050) were all significantly associated with elevated loneliness risk. Conclusion Loneliness among Indonesian youth is shaped by interrelated individual and family factors. Interventions should focus on modifiable targets, including strengthening social support, enhancing self-care and mindfulness.
