Neighbourhood resources may be relevant to late-life depression, but evidence varies across resource types, measurement approaches, and contexts. This systematic review synthesised evidence on the associations between material neighbourhood resources, formal community service resources, and depression or depressive symptoms in older adults, and separately examined exploratory findings on mediation and effect modification. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched from inception to 22 March 2026 without language restrictions. Quantitative observational studies of community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 60 years were eligible. Risk of bias was assessed using design-specific versions of the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Given substantial conceptual and methodological heterogeneity, findings were synthesised using a structured approach without meta-analysis, consistent with the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis guideline. Certainty of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Sixteen observational studies were included: 12 cross-sectional and four longitudinal. Ten studies contributed core material-resource evidence, with one additional mixed/hybrid study; five examined formal community service resources, and six contributed exploratory mediation or effect-modification findings, with some studies contributing to more than one domain. Evidence was concentrated in East Asia, with limited representation from other regions. Associations for material neighbourhood resources were heterogeneous, with inverse, null, and positive findings across resource types, spatial scales, population subgroups, and temporal components. Formal community service-resource associations were also mixed and context dependent, although some longitudinal studies linked greater reported service availability with lower subsequent depressive symptoms. Exploratory mediation and effect-modification findings were inconsistent and did not identify any consistently supported mediator or effect modifier. Certainty of evidence was very low for both main domains because of serious concerns regarding risk of bias, inconsistency, indirectness, and imprecision. Evidence linking material neighbourhood resources and formal community service resources with late-life depression is heterogeneous and of very low certainty. Material neighbourhood resource availability or accessibility did not follow a simple “more resources–less depression” pattern, and evidence for formal community service resources was limited and inconsistent. Exploratory mediation and effect-modification findings should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating.
