Introduction This study examines how screen producers navigate cultural representation, market access, and creative authority within transnational production governance in the platform era. Moving beyond a binary opposition between platform dominance and producer autonomy, it develops the Access–Representation Nexus as a conceptual framework for examining the relationship between financial, legal, institutional, and distributive access and producers’ ability to retain authority over culturally consequential representation. Methods The study employed a qualitative multi-method design combining semi-structured interviews with ten experienced industry informants from Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia with comparative analysis of the cross-border productions TWIN and The Medium . Results The findings identify a recurrent “negotiate–adapt” dynamic involving territorial-rights protection, negotiated creative authority, manufactured cultural proximity, and selective narrative adaptation. Importantly, the data suggest that the principal governance mechanisms identified—rights allocation, territorial licensing, financing conditions, distribution arrangements, and creative-authority settlements—are not specific to digital platforms. These mechanisms predate streaming and operate through co-production, broadcasting, studio, financing, and public-institutional arrangements. Platformization is therefore understood as a broader structural context that may intensify or reconfigure existing production-governance relationships rather than originate them. Discussion The access–representation nexus conceptualizes market access and representational authority as analytically distinct but interdependent dimensions of production negotiation, showing how producers may concede economic, territorial, or contractual rights while retaining authority over culturally consequential creative decisions. Cultural agency is therefore understood as relational, negotiated, and structurally conditioned rather than as either complete autonomy or straightforward subordination.
