Information from the abstract

Incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 into CeO 2 /carbon nanocomposites offers a promising approach for tuning their electrochemical and adsorption properties. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 /carbon, CeO 2 /carbon, and Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process at 180 °C for 16 h using NaOH. The hybrid composites were prepared with Fe 3 O 4 :CeO 2 molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1, denoted as Fe 3 O 4 –2CeO 2 /carbon, Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon, and 2Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon, respectively. Structural, morphological, textural, and surface-chemical analyses were performed using XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, BET, and XPS. The results confirmed the presence of CeO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 crystalline phases and nanosized oxide particles supported on carbon. XPS analysis of the representative 1:1 composite revealed mixed iron oxidation states, cerium oxide species, and oxygen-containing carbon functionalities. The 2Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon composite exhibited the highest BET surface area, 380.80 m 2 g −1 , whereas CeO 2 /carbon achieved the highest methylene blue removal efficiency of 87.96% at 36 min. Electrochemical measurements revealed different optimum compositions: Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon (1:1) delivered the highest CV-derived specific capacitance of 212 F g −1 at 1 mV s −1 , while 2Fe 3 O 4 –CeO 2 /carbon exhibited the highest GCD-derived capacitance of 153 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , compared with 98 and 75 F g −1 , respectively, for CeO 2 /carbon. The hybrid electrodes retained 81.70–91.44% of their initial capacitance after 3000 cycles at 10 A g −1 , with the Ce-rich hybrid showing the highest retention. EIS analysis further indicated composition-dependent charge-transfer behavior, with the 2:1 composite exhibiting the lowest R ct , 0.194 Ω. These findings demonstrate that the Fe 3 O 4 :CeO 2 ratio governs the balance among accessible pore structure, surface redox chemistry, charge-transfer behavior, and functional performance, providing a basis for optimizing mixed-metal-oxide/carbon electrodes for supercapacitor applications.
