Versatile membranes for integrated electrochemical energy systems, specifically zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) and acid-alkaline electrolyzers must simultaneously provide efficient ion transport, electrolyte retention, and structural stability under diverse aqueous conditions. However, conventional polymer separators suffer from limited electrolyte compatibility and unstable ion transport, restricting their versatility across different electrochemical platforms. In this work, a sustainable membrane system is developed via electrospinning, utilizing recycled polyphenylsulfone (rPPSU) derived from waste baby bottles and partially bio-based polyurethane (PU). The blended rPPSU/PU formed porous fibrous networks via electrospinning, enhancing porosity and electrolyte uptake to 93.1% and 659%, respectively, for the 50/50 rPPSU/PU sample. Similarly, the separator maintained good thermal stability and dimensional integrity during operation. The 50/50 rPPSU/PU separator achieved an ionic conductivity of 10.06 mS cm –1 and stable Zn plating/stripping behavior for over 700 hrs. Moreover, in situ time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS) further revealed a gradual increase in the relative fraction of Mn 4+ during cycling, which may contribute to the stable cycling performance of the 50/50 rPPSU/PU separator. Furthermore, the membrane was preliminarily evaluated for application in an acid-alkaline electrolyzer system. The acid-alkaline electrolyzer employing the 50/50 rPPSU/PU membrane generated 104.2 μmol of hydrogen (H 2 ) after 2 hrs due to enhanced electrolyte uptake capability and continuous ion-transport pathways within the electrospun fibrous structure. This result provides a preliminary proof-of-concept for the potential use of the membrane in acid-alkaline electrolysis. Overall, these findings demonstrate the potential of the rPPSU/PU membrane platform for integrated electrochemical energy storage and hydrogen production applications.
