The study focuses on “Tra Banthom Phrai,” a high-level instrumental piece used to accompany the scene depicting a character sleeping in the forest, as well as in Thai music and Khon (masked dance-drama) teacher-honoring ceremonies to signify success and auspiciousness. The study of the structure and melodic transmission reveals that Phraya Prasarn Duriyasap (Plaek Prasarnsap) expanded two-fold main melody of “Tra Banthom Phrai” into three-fold version in both vocal and instrumental forms, resulting in a composition known as “Prathom Phrai” or “Banthom Phrai Sam Chan.” Later, Phraya Phumi Sevin (Chitr Chittasewi) adapted this melody into a solo piece for the Saw Sam Sai (Thai three-stringed fiddle), also titled “Banthom Phrai Sam Chan.” An analysis of the two pieces reveals similarities in the use of poetic phrasing in the “Tiew Wan” (Melisma) and “Tiew Kep” (Pecia), in both the opening and closing sections. These similarities result in a harmonious, melodious, and sacred composition within the traditional Thai music framework. Furthermore, the “Trabanthom Phrai” song holds cultural significance, signifying strict adherence to tradition. Students are required to undergo a teacher-initiation ceremony before they can learn the song. This finding therefore provides an important guideline for the transmission and preservation of the cultural heritage of Thai music.
