Toxicological Assessment of Oligofructans Derived from Raw Sugar Fermentation by Bacillus subtilis TISTR 001 and Their Modulatory Effects on Rat Gut Microbiota

Thai researchers evaluated oligofructans produced from raw sugar using Bacillus subtilis TISTR 001. Rats showed no treatment-related mortality or toxicity at doses up to 2,000 mg/kg/day for 90 days, alongside reported shifts in gut microbial taxa. These are preclinical animal findings and do not establish human safety or benefit.

Across 90 days, no treatment-related adverse hematological, biochemical, or histopathological effects were reported, yielding a study-condition NOAEL of 2,000 mg/kg/day. Potentially beneficial commensals increased while some inflammation- or metabolic-dysfunction-associated taxa decreased.
