Associations Between Dietary Patterns, Nutrient Intake, and Serum Biomarkers in Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Northern Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study

A cross-sectional study of 117 older adults in Lampang and Chiang Mai identified four patterns: diverse traditional, processed staple-based, tropical fruit, and Western high-fat/high-sweet diets. The traditional group had higher fiber and lower total cholesterol than the tropical-fruit and Western groups.

  • Fiber differed significantly, highest in the diverse traditional pattern and lowest in the processed staple pattern. Total energy and major nutrients did not differ. Total cholesterol was lower in the traditional group than in tropical-fruit and Western groups; unreported biomarkers should not be assumed to differ.

Healthy-aging strategies may build on local vegetable- and fish-rich dishes rather than importing an entire foreign diet. The study can inform culturally grounded trials and food policy, but it is not evidence for individualized dietary prescriptions.

Limitations to consider

The sample of 117 may not represent all northern Thai older adults. FFQs depend on recall and portion estimation, while assigning one dominant pattern discards overlap. Residual confounding remains after adjustment, and one-time measurement cannot establish temporal direction.
