DJC6219 and NK62157 were isolated from municipal wastewater and characterised through host-range assays, electron microscopy, stability, multiplicity-of-infection optimisation, growth kinetics and genomics.
Key findings
- Both phages were stable under moderate conditions and less viable at extremes. Inhibition occurred at MOIs 0.1–1, while the cocktail improved suppression at MOI 0.01. No known resistance, virulence or lysogeny genes were detected.
Why this matters globally
Reducing antibiotic dependence in aquaculture is a global One Health priority. Phages offer pathogen-specific control, but narrow host range and phage resistance require management.

Thai teams from Chulabhorn Graduate Institute, Chulabhorn Research Institute and Mahasarakham University isolated and characterised the candidate phages.
Limitations to consider
In-vitro suppression does not reproduce host immunity, microbiota or farm ecology. Absence of known harmful genes depends on current databases. Resistance, distribution and non-target effects remain unknown.
