Evidence of global relevance

A new false truffle species, Hysterangium shibaoshanense (Hysterangiales, Basidiomycota), from northwestern Yunnan, China

An international taxonomic team describes the new false-truffle species Hysterangium shibaoshanense from Shibaoshan Mountain, northwestern Yunnan, China, using morphology and multilocus phylogenies from ITS, nrLSU, atp6, rpb2, and tef1.

01

Key findings

  • The species has a non-discoloring peridium, light golden-yellow spores measuring 2-4 by 0.8-1.5 micrometers excluding the utricle, and asymmetrically inflated utricles 0.5-1.5 micrometers thick in KOH or water. These traits and phylogeny distinguish it from known taxa.
02

Why this matters globally

Documenting hypogeous fungi fills Asian biodiversity and plant-interaction gaps and provides reference sequences for future environmental surveys.

03

Thai researcher contribution

Mae Fah Luang University and its Center of Excellence in Fungal Research contributed taxonomic and phylogenetic expertise, although the specimen was collected in China rather than Thailand.

04

Limitations to consider

The abstract does not state specimen count, additional populations, experimental ecology, or conservation assessment. Multilocus trees still depend on taxon sampling and references, and species description does not establish ecological function or utility.
