Development of lateral flow assays for the rapid diagnosis of glanders in equids

Three antibody LFAs targeting Hcp1, GroEL and whole-cell lysate used protein-G colloidal gold and were tested on 31 positive and 51 negative Mongolian equine sera plus 60 other-infection sera from Japan.

Key findings

  • Sensitivity/specificity were 100/100% for Hcp1, 100/98.0% for WCL and 100/90.2% for GroEL. No cross-reactivity occurred in the Japanese panel and all assays remained functional for at least 16 weeks at 37°C.

Why this matters globally

Glanders is a zoonotic and trade-relevant disease. Low-resource field tests could be valuable, but case-control performance can exceed that in low-prevalence routine settings.

Limitations to consider
