Evidence of global relevance

First report and molecular characterization of gizzard erosion-associated fowl adenovirus serotype 8a in Thailand

Gizzard lesions in Thai chickens contained intranuclear inclusions, in-situ hybridization signal and PCR-confirmed fowl adenovirus. Hexon and fibre sequencing identified FAdV-8a strain FAdV8a_NPT_KU001_25, closer to a gizzard-tropic than an inclusion-body-hepatitis strain. Association is supported, but causation remains unproven.

01

Key findings

  • Intranuclear inclusions and FAdV signal localized to affected glandular epithelium. Sequencing identified FAdV-8a, phylogenetically closer to a gizzard-tropic strain. Fibre-knob differences are hypotheses for tissue tropism, not functionally established mechanisms.
02

Why this matters globally

Poultry systems worldwide need surveillance for subclinical adenoviral disease. Thai genomic data expand understanding of FAdV diversity and tissue tropism.

04

Limitations to consider

The abstract omits farm and sample counts, lacks unaffected controls, and provides no isolation-challenge reproduction or fibre-function test. Co-infections, feed and management could contribute.
