Regulatory Convergence and Divergence in ESG Reporting in the Indo‐Pacific Region

ABSTRACT Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting has evolved significantly globally over the past few decades. Many countries are now signatories to international agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, with increasing commitments to emissions reduction targets and the achievement of broader sustainability goals outlined in modern ESG reporting. The Indo‐Pacific is a fast‐growing economic powerhouse that will also face significant climate change challenges. This region is also increasingly demonstrating an important role in global geopolitics. This paper examines how four major economies in the Indo‐Pacific region, India, Japan, Thailand, and Australia, are responding to rising political and investor expectations for higher levels of climate change and sustainability reporting through ESG reporting mechanisms. Discussion highlights advances in sustainability performance assessment beyond western‐centric perspectives and reframes global ESG leadership in terms of a rapidly growing economic region's commitment to ESG reporting structures and sustainability leadership.

Protection Motivation Theory Constructs and Smoking Cessation Intention among University Students in Northeastern Thailand: A Mixed-Methods Study

Background: Intention to quit smoking is an essential precursor to cessation. Although Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) explains smoking behavior, its link to cessation intention among Thai youth remains under-researched. This study examined university students' smoking cessation intentions and its association with PMT constructs. Methodology: A mixed-methods study was conducted among 1,493 student smokers from six universities in Northeast Thailand (August 2024 - January 2025) using multistage sampling. Data were collected via self-administered questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 15 purposively selected smokers. Quantitative data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression, while qualitative data underwent descriptive content analysis. Results: Quantitatively, 48.9% of participants intended to quit. Stronger intentions were significantly associated with higher perceived severity, vulnerability, self-efficacy, and response efficacy. Conversely, intrinsic/extrinsic rewards and response costs were inversely associated with intention. Qualitative findings corroborated that awareness of smoking’s harm and high self-efficacy bolstered quitting confidence. However, perceived positive effects, habitual use, social exposure to smokers, and limited information on cessation services acted as significant barriers. Conclusions: PMT plays a significantly influential role in shaping quitting intentions. Consequently, these factors should be integrated into cessation interventions such as tailored educational programs to enhance service accessibility and strengthen the resolve to quit among youth.

Resilience of black-boned and Thai native chickens to heat stress: Implications of temperature–humidity index for sustainable egg production

As climate change intensifies, improving heat tolerance has become an important objective for sustaining poultry productivity in tropical and subtropical environments. This study evaluated the effects of the temperature-humidity index (THI) on monthly egg production and genetic parameters in black-boned and Thai native chickens, with an emphasis on identifying heat stress thresholds and genotype-specific responses. A total of 136,816 monthly egg production records from 3,680 black-boned and 7,850 Thai native chickens were analyzed using a repeatability test-day model. Heat stress onset was observed at THI 72 in black-boned chickens and THI 74 in Thai native chickens. Thai native chickens maintained higher egg production rates and sustained positive responses over a wider THI range. Heritability declined with increasing THI (0.162-0.107 in black-boned; 0.175-0.132 in Thai native chickens), and genetic correlations between monthly egg production and heat stress shifted from positive to negative in both chicken genotypes (from 0.350 to -0.723 in black-boned chickens and from 0.500 to -0.524 in Thai native chickens). The rate of decline in egg production increased with THI, and was greater in black-boned chickens than in Thai native chickens (from 1.01 to -2.03 eggs/bird/THI level in black-boned chickens and from 1.77 to -1.22 eggs/bird/THI level in Thai native chickens across THI 70-80). The proportion of chickens with heat-tolerant breeding values decreased across THI levels, but remained higher in Thai native chickens. The results of this study demonstrated a nonlinear, genotype-dependent response to heat stress and provided a framework for integrating THI into genetic evaluations to enhance resilience and sustain egg production under tropical conditions.

Efficacy and safety of home-based fiberoptic blanket versus hospital-based light-emitting diode phototherapy for neonatal jaundice: a retrospective cohort study from Thailand

Background: Home phototherapy (HPT) is an alternative to inpatient phototherapy (IPT) for the treatment of neonatal jaundice; however, comparative data remain limited on the effectiveness of phototherapy (PT) devices across care settings. Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of HPT using a fiberoptic light-emitting diode (LED) PT blanket with those of IPT using overhead LED PT in neonates with jaundice. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included neonates born at ≥35 weeks' gestation who were prescribed treatment for jaundice at a tertiary academic medical center in Thailand between August 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. Infants who underwent either HPT or IPT were included. The bilirubin reduction, treatment success, and adverse event rates were compared between groups. Results: A total of 100 PT sessions (89 neonates) were analyzed, including 55 HPT sessions (50 infants) and 45 IPT sessions (43 infants). Some infants received both treatment modalities during separate sessions, and each session was analyzed according to the administered PT modality. “L'homme est condamné à être libre!”: Freedom as a rhizomatic affordance ecology in project-based language learning

Project-based language learning is frequently praised for giving learners choice, voice, collaboration, and authentic language use. While this commendation is not without merit, it remains epistemologically incomplete. A project can decentralize classroom activity while leaving deeper conditions of freedom untouched: who is allowed to define relevance, which language practices become legitimate, which resources can be combined, whose purposes survive assessment, and when a communicative product is ready to be released. This article, therefore, argues that freedom in project-based language learning cannot be reduced to learner autonomy, self-regulated learning, co-regulation, socially shared regulation, or reduced teacher control. These concepts remain necessary, but they do not by themselves explain how learners gain authority over the conditions of meaningful language action. Drawing on ecological affordance theory, critical applied linguistics, rhizomatic learning, research on self-regulated and socially regulated learning, and the five-dimensional affordance framework, the article develops freedom as a rhizomatic affordance ecology organized through five interacting regions: perceptibility, learning valence, compositionality, normativity, and intentionality. The argument is also extended to AI-mediated language learning, where generative tools can expand opportunity while relocating judgment, standardizing voice, and weakening responsibility for purpose. The article contributes a critical account of project freedom that is language-specific, power-sensitive, and empirically traceable.

Ergonomic Risks for Ice Production Employees and Assessment of Their Occupational Health and Safety: A Case Study in Surat Thani, Thailand

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a critical global challenge to workforce productivity. In Thailand, these disorders are particularly prevalent in labor-intensive industries such as ice manufacturing, where workers face significant ergonomic hazards. Addressing this gap, the present study aimed to assess the occupational health, safety, and ergonomic risks facing workers in ice production facilities. This cross-sectional descriptive study investigated production workers who were employees in two of eight ice manufacturing plants in Surat Thani, Thailand, using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method. A structured occupational health and safety risk assessment questionnaire and the REBA evaluation form were used to collect data. All participants were male, averaging 30.4 (±8.5) years old. Regular pain areas included the upper/lower back, hips/thighs, shoulders, wrists, and ankles. Ergonomic assessments showed high overall risk due to heavy lifting, repetitive tasks, and cold environments. Based on REBA scores, 13.04% were in the very-high-risk group (score ≥ 11) and 65.22% in the high-risk group (score 8–10). Most production workers in ice plants faced high ergonomic risks, especially from postures affecting the upper and lower back. Training should be provided to promote awareness of risky postures and proper lifting techniques. Mechanical aids and back-support equipment are also recommended to help prevent musculoskeletal injuries.

Organizational Career Growth, Employee Voice, and Work Engagement: A Multigroup Analysis of Hotel Managers and Staff

ABSTRACT This study examines how organizational career growth influences work engagement through employee voice and whether this process differs by job position. Drawing on the job demands–resources (JD‐R) model, social exchange theory, and self‐determination theory, this study applies partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM) and multigroup analysis to test the proposed model through an examination of survey data from 397 hotel employees in Thailand. The findings indicate that employee voice mediates the positive relationship between organizational career growth and work engagement. The effect of voice on engagement also differs between managerial and nonmanagerial employees. These results highlight the importance of fostering career growth opportunities and promoting voice systems to enhance engagement in the hospitality sector. Practical implications are provided for hotel HR departments, including strategies to design career development initiatives and strengthen communication mechanisms that address the distinct needs of managers and staff.

Azimuthal Directivity Evident in the Regional Amplitude and Duration of Ground Motions from the 2025 Mw 7.7 Mandalay Earthquake

Abstract The 28 March 2025 Mw 7.7 Mandalay earthquake produced long-period ground motions that propagated throughout mainland Southeast Asia. Although the supershear rupture along the Sagaing fault has been documented, its influence on regional shaking has not yet been quantified. Earlier work by Ornthammarath et al. (2025) focused mainly on long-period basin amplification in Bangkok. The present study expands the analysis to quantify amplitude and duration characteristics using 30 three-component strong-motion recordings from Myanmar and Thailand. We analyze amplitude and duration residuals relative to Next Generation Attenuation-West2 ground-motion and duration models. The results reveal a pronounced azimuthal pattern: stations located between 110 and 155 azimuth degrees from the rupture fault aligned with the Mach fronts of the southward-propagating supershear rupture exhibit large positive spectral acceleration residuals and strongly negative D5–95 duration residuals. In contrast, stations southwest and west of the rupture (e.g., Yangon and Nyaung U, respectively) show negative amplitude residuals and positive duration residuals. This bilateral contrast closely matches the expected Mach cone radiation pattern of a supershear rupture, demonstrating that regional ground motions (150–600 km) may retain the geometric imprint of the rupture-front speed. These findings suggest that supershear-related directional effects may persist beyond the near-fault region and contribute to far-field amplification patterns, with potential implications for incorporating rupture dynamics and a fault-to-site azimuth parameter into ground-motion models used in seismic hazard assessments of large strike-slip faults in similar tectonic environments.

Comparative Study of Rhodium Recovery from Plating Solutions via Cementation, Chemical Precipitation and Electrowinning

Rhodium plating is currently in appreciable demand not only for automotive as in catalyst converter but also for jewelry industry due to its silvery-white appearance, allergy-friendly, durable, scratch and tarnish-resistant. In accordance with circular economy, to assure efficient reuse and deviating from primary resource reliance, rhodium recovery is therefore of significance as the secondary resources. This research investigated comparative study of rhodium recovery from the plating solution via three techniques: cementation, chemical precipitation and electrowinning. The fresh plating solution prepared from rhodium concentrate and additive solutions was diluted to 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 g/L of rhodium and used as the equivalent spent plating solutions. It was found that both cementation using zinc powder and chemical precipitation using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide did not yield notable recovery and gave low purity recovered products. Electrowinning has shown be more effective among the three techniques. For electrowinning, the diluted solutions were used as electrolyte, while the current density was controlled at 0.08-0.14 A/cm 2 for 2-24 h. Rhodium could be obtained at the cathode, giving the average rhodium content of 94.02 wt.% and the purity of greater than 98%. At the greater rhodium concentration of 0.4 g/L, deposition of rhodium metal was uniform appearing as clusters of particles on the cathode surface where nucleation and growth are competitive.

Antipyretic and Antinociceptive Activities of Tri-Phol-That Extract and Its Flavonoids: In Vivo and In Silico Evidence

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Despite the common use of herbal medicines rich in flavonoids to treat fever and pain, the pharmacological mechanisms involved in these effects are poorly understood. Therefore, this study assessed the antipyretic and analgesic effects of Tri-Phol-That extract, characterized its major flavonoids, and investigated its possible molecular interactions with key inflammatory mediators. The antipyretic activity was evaluated against a turpentine-induced pyrexia model in mice. Analgesic activity was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced writhing, tail immersion, and hot plate tests. The concentration of rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Molecular docking was performed using GNINA against COX-2 (mouse: 1CX2, human: 5KIR), COX-1 (ovine: 3N8X), and mPGES-1 (human: 4YL1). Interaction profile studies were also performed in the Discovery Studio 2021. The hydroethanolic extract lowered rectal temperature in a dose-dependent manner, with maximum inhibition occurring at 100–200 mg/kg, although the effect was less potent than that of tolfenamic acid. The acetic acid-induced writhing test also showed strong dose-dependent peripheral antinociceptive activity with 84.64% inhibition at 200 mg/kg of extract, comparable to tolfenamic acid. The central analgesic effects of extracts were observed in hot plate tests. Weak central analgesic effects were also observed in tail immersion tests. HPLC analysis indicated rutin (4.01 μg/g), kaempferol (2.13 μg/g), and quercetin (0.96 μg/g) were the most abundant flavonoid compounds. Environmental Stability and External Environmental Dependency Analysis of Vertical Farm Remodeled from Agricultural Shelter House

This study proposes a model for constructing an energy-efficient vertical farm by retrofitting an existing agricultural facility, specifically an Agricultural Shelter House ("Nongmak house"), and evaluates its performance.An eight-layer composite thermal insulation covering system was applied to a 231 m 2 (70 pyeong) agricultural shelter house, which was converted into a closed-type vertical farm.To quantitatively assess the thermal insulation performance and environmental stability of the retrofitted system, the U-value was measured, and the internal and external environmental data were analyzed.Environmental stability was defined as the degree to which optimal internal environments (temperature, humidity, etc.) for crop growth can be maintained within a certain range regardless of external environmental changes, which is essential for minimizing crop stress and creating efficient cultivation environments.The calculated U-value of the composite insulation system was 1.939 W/m 2 •K.Although this value does not reach the level of conventional container-type vertical farms (0.193-0.225W/m 2 •K), it exhibits superior performance compared to single-layer PE film greenhouses (6.476 W/m 2 •K) and high-performance triple-layer thermal curtain systems (2.73 W/m 2 •K).Furthermore, the analysis of external climate, conventional greenhouse, and vertical farm internal environments demonstrated that the retrofitted vertical farm maintained highly stable conditions, with a temperature coefficient of variation (CV) of 5.85% and a relative humidity CV of 11.58%.Compared to external and conventional greenhouse environments, this structure provided significantly enhanced environmental stability.Statistical analysis using independent t-tests confirmed that the vertical farm showed…

Metabolomic Differentiation and Chemotaxonomic Insights into Three Korean Alnus Species Revealed by UPLC–QTOF/MS

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Alnus species distributed on Ulleung Island, South Korea exhibit persistent taxonomic ambiguity due to high morphological similarity and limited genetic divergence within the green alder complex. To establish chemically discriminatory criteria for species delimitation, UPLC–QTOF/MS-based untargeted metabolomic profiling was applied to Alnus alnobetula subsp. fruticosa (AA), Alnus incana subsp. hirsuta (AI), and Alnus firma (AF). Multivariate statistical analysis revealed reproducible metabolome-level differentiation among the three taxa. Among 47 annotated secondary metabolites, statistically significant discriminant features were defined as marker metabolites. Biosynthetic interpretation showed that these markers were structurally concentrated within distinct metabolite classes and selected discriminant markers were structurally confirmed. Alnustic acid-related secodammarane-type triterpenoid markers were consistently detected in AA and AF but absent in AI, providing a chemical criterion for exclusion of AI. In contrast, separation between AA and AF was driven by quantitative differences in conserved diarylheptanoid and flavonoid markers. Functional evaluation further demonstrated metabolite class-dependent biological activities. Collectively, integration of statistical prioritization, biosynthetic interpretation, structural validation, and functional assessment establishes a marker-based chemotaxonomic framework for resolving taxonomic ambiguity within Korean Alnus taxa.
