Blue Carbon and Coastal Communities71IMPACT SIGNAL
International research agenda

The next blue-carbon agenda prioritizes coastal communities, equity and credible carbon accounting

Seven years after the previous global assessment, a new priority-setting exercise covered classical mangroves, marshes and seagrasses and expanded systems such as tidal flats, macroalgal forests and shelf sediments. The highest priority was management that supports coastal communities and integrates traditional ecological knowledge, treating legitimacy and equity as prerequisites for durable outcomes. Other priorities covered cost-effective restoration, greenhouse-gas flux accuracy, human impacts on carbon cycling, biodiversity and coastal-protection co-benefits, and remote sensing, ML and data sharing.

Epitope-imprinted polymers offer synthetic receptors for bacterial detection without conventional antibodies

Epitope-imprinted polymers use short surface peptides as templates to create robust, accessible synthetic recognition cavities instead of imprinting whole bacteria or proteins. The review covers rational and computational epitope selection, monomers, bulk, surface, nanoMIP and electropolymerization, template removal and examples targeting M. leprae, S. Typhi and N. meningitidis with electrochemical and piezoelectric transducers. Detection limits, imprinting factors and matrix selectivity are discussed alongside AI-assisted, multiepitope, nanomaterial and portable POC strategies.

Machine Learning for Materials71IMPACT SIGNAL
Recent advances review

Machine learning can reduce composite experiments, but small and inconsistent datasets limit prediction

The review examines ML prediction of mechanical and tribological properties in fiber-reinforced epoxy, polyester and vinyl-ester composites with silica, graphene, CNT and nanoclay fillers. Studies from 2020-2025 use ANN, SVM, random forests and Gaussian processes for wear, tensile and flexural strength and stress-strain behavior. ML may reduce experiments and aid optimization, but datasets are small, features and units vary and models often fail across systems. Multi-fidelity and physics-informed ML, open databases and standards are proposed.

A conserved PTRAMP-CSS-Ripr complex helps multiple malaria parasites invade red blood cells

Red-cell invasion is essential to malaria. P. falciparum uses a PCRCR complex, but Rh5 is species restricted. Orthologs of PTRAMP, CSS and Ripr from P. falciparum, P. vivax and P. knowlesi formed disulfide-linked PTRAMP-CSS heterodimers and bound the Ripr C terminus as a conserved PCR complex. Cross-reactive antibodies differentially inhibited invasion, crystallography revealed an inhibitory PvRipr epitope, and P. knowlesi cryo-EM confirmed a conserved invasion scaffold.

Cross-sectional mediation evidence

Cancer financial toxicity is linked to lower life satisfaction, with hope and support as potential buffers

Baseline ENRICh-II data covered 519 adults diagnosed within the prior year across six ambulatory oncology clinics. Mean age was 52 and 67.2% were women. Financial toxicity, life satisfaction, state hope and social support were measured. Greater toxicity correlated with lower satisfaction (r=-0.34). Hope and support statistically partially mediated the association, with indirect effects of -0.08 and -0.03, also across material, coping and distress domains. The authors propose psychosocial resilience alongside financial assistance.

International priority-setting consensus

Fifty-one experts prioritized outbreak warning and diagnostic equity for global-health AI

An international CHNRI exercise asked 51 experts to score 155 research ideas on feasibility, disease-burden impact, paradigm-shift potential, implementation and equity. Highest priorities included outbreak prediction, infectious-disease diagnostics and early warnings, followed by resource allocation, telemedicine, culturally adapted mobile health and chronic-disease tools. LMIC experts emphasized infectious-disease control and diagnostic equity, while high-income experts emphasized infrastructure and climate analytics, showing why affected regions need decision power.

Macadamia shells became porous-carbon supercapacitor electrodes stable over 10,000 cycles

Macadamia shells were carbonized at 600°C and KOH-activated at 800°C with carbon:KOH ratios of 1:1 to 1:3. Activation raised surface area from 325 to 1,362 m2/g, producing mainly micropores with partial mesoporosity. The 1:3 material reached 170 F/g at 1 A/g in three-electrode 6 M KOH and behaved mainly as an electric double-layer capacitor. A symmetric coin cell delivered 5.4 Wh/kg and 2,500 W/kg and remained stable for 10,000 cycles at 3 A/g.

Infectious Disease Surveillance72IMPACT SIGNAL
National surveillance evidence

Japan's invasive meningococcal cases fell to one during COVID-19, then rebounded to 68 in 2025

Japan's national surveillance from January 2017 to October 2025 identified 288 IMD cases across pre-pandemic, pandemic and reopening phases. Cases fell from 48 in 2019 to one in 2021, then rose to 66 in 2024 and 68 by October 2025. Older adults consistently accounted for the most cases, adolescents clearly rebounded, and Tokyo rose more than Osaka/Kansai. No Expo-specific surge appeared. Cases and inbound travel had Spearman rho 1.000, although most infections were domestically acquired.

RaLak titanium lattices tune stiffness and energy absorption to better mimic bone

Solid metallic implants are much stiffer than bone and can cause stress shielding. A Ti6Al4V bio-inspired lattice called RaLak was laser-powder-bed-fused at 20% and 30% relative density and 2-4-mm cells and compared with gyroid and diamond TPMS. RaLak improved the stiffness-energy-absorption balance; at 30% density and 4-mm cells it absorbed about 50% more energy than gyroid. Its hybrid architecture promoted uniform stress and progressive deformation, and modified Gibson-Ashby models linked geometry to response.

Two experiments suggest GenAI can reduce overload in sustainable travel choices

Two experiments covered trip planning and on-site shopping to test whether GenAI helps users navigate abundant eco-certified options. More advanced tools reduced perceived information overload and improved decision-making. Greater trust related to well-being and intention to use GenAI, while lower perceived decision risk also related to intention. The authors report more eco-responsible choices, but the abstract does not clarify whether behavior was consequential or self-reported.

Systematic review and meta-analysis

Implant-supported prostheses produced stronger functional gains for older adults with tooth loss

From 7,654 records, 24 studies with 1,711 adults aged at least 65 and prosthesis use for six months were included. Fourteen studies assessed mastication and bite force. Complete dentures gave modest gains, while implant overdentures produced higher performance and bite force with more consistent long-term improvement. Across 18 PROM studies, implant overdentures and fixed full-arch prostheses produced the largest oral-health quality-of-life gains; complete and removable partial dentures had smaller positive changes. Subjective chewing improved over 6-12 months with high heterogeneity.

Regional scoping-review evidence

Heat raises health risks across ASEAN, while heatwave definitions and geographic evidence remain fragmented

This scoping review included 76 Southeast Asian studies published since 2000: 28 mortality, 38 morbidity and 10 effect-modification studies. Minimum-risk temperatures and thresholds varied widely by location and outcome. Reported relative risks ranged from 1.02 for all-cause admission in Vietnam to 4.21 for dengue in Laos, but these outcomes are not directly comparable. Relationships were often nonlinear, evidence for heat-air pollution synergy was mixed, immediate effects were stronger for NCDs, and some dengue studies reported long lags.
