Visual Impairment Was Associated With Nearly Threefold Higher Odds of Frailty Progression in Thai Older Adults

NECTIN2 Depletion Cut Migration and Invasion by About Half, but Only in One Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cell Line

This study asked whether the cell-surface adhesion molecule NECTIN2 contributes to motility and invasion in triple-negative breast cancer. The team combined public-dataset analyses with stable NECTIN2 depletion in MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells. The major phenotype was confined to MDA-MB-231: migration and invasion fell by about 50%, accompanied by lower LIMK1 and cytoskeletal changes, while LIMK1 re-expression partially restored migration. The findings support a context-dependent mechanism, not a clinically validated drug target or proof that NECTIN2 inhibition prevents metastasis in patients.

Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial

A Smartphone Antimicrobial Prescribing App Did Not Outperform Paper Guidelines Across Six Lao Hospitals

Across a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial in six Lao hospitals, a smartphone version of national antimicrobial prescribing guidelines plus one stewardship training session did not significantly improve adherence over paper versions after adjustment for time, clustering, and confounders. Inpatient adherence was 25.6% versus 17.0% before adjustment, but the adjusted odds ratio was 1.26 (95% CI 0.8–1.9; p=0.276); outpatient results were also null. The finding argues for sustained, multifaceted stewardship rather than guideline access alone.

Two-Stage Model Classifies 46 Produce and Vegetable-Dish Categories at 92.43% Top-1 Accuracy, but Lacks On-Device Validation

The study developed a two-stage ThaiSook pipeline: a binary model first rejects non-produce images, after which a multiclass model identifies 43 fruit and vegetable types and three vegetable-heavy dishes. The 40,595-image dataset contained 11,210 labelled and 29,385 unlabelled user images. With label smoothing and temperature scaling, the pipeline reached 92.43% top-1, 94.56% top-3, and 94.91% top-5 accuracy; Noisy Student raised top-1 accuracy to 92.59%. However, results rely on one train–test split, without real on-device testing or evidence that classification improves dietary measurement or health outcomes.

Lower-Income Asia-Pacific Settings Reported Full Out-of-Pocket Cost for 95.2% of High-Benefit Medicine–Country Pairs

This predefined regional analysis of ESMO's 2023 global survey covered 20 Asia-Pacific countries and compared WHO essential cancer medicines with high-benefit medicines under ESMO-MCBS. The findings show that marketing availability does not equal reliable access: reimbursement and patient out-of-pocket burden remain major bottlenecks. Access was generally stronger in high-income economies, while middle- and lower-income groups faced large gaps, particularly for high-benefit medicines. The evidence is expert-reported and cross-sectional, and income-group aggregates must not be presented as Thailand-specific estimates.

GEDI–Sentinel Model Maps Northeast Thai Rubber at 82.63% Accuracy but Struggles With Young Plantations

This study mapped 2024 rubber distribution and age structure across Northeast Thailand using Random Forest in Google Earth Engine, combining Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, vegetation indices, and a GEDI-trained canopy-height model. Three-class rubber mapping reached 82.63% overall accuracy and about 0.84 F1; three-group age classification reached 83.39%. Plantations older than seven years dominated and were classified more reliably than young stands. The output is a regional monitoring baseline, not an error-free parcel-level decision map.

Advance-Care-Planning Training Raised Residents’ Knowledge From 7.74 to 8.65, but Had No Control Group

This mixed-methods evaluation tested an Advance Care Planning programme combining role-play, personal-value reflection, and two Circle of Learning sessions with an entire cohort of 50 first-year internal-medicine residents. Longitudinal analysis used 34 complete cases through 15 months, and 10 residents were interviewed. Knowledge rose from 7.74 to 8.65 out of 9, alongside several attitude and confidence improvements. Interviewees said role-play bridged theory and practice but identified a need for ongoing workplace support. The evidence concerns learner readiness, not observed conversation quality or patient outcomes.

Migrant TB Patients Chose Months-Long Sanatorium Care to Pursue Cure Amid Cost, Transport, and Documentation Barriers

This multi-perspective qualitative study at the SMRU tuberculosis sanatorium in Mae Ramat, Tak Province, examined why migrants choose long residential treatment. It included 37 unique patients—33 who chose the sanatorium and four who chose community DOTS—plus five health workers. Three themes organized the findings: desire for cure, barriers to diagnosis and treatment, and community and organizational support.

Patients in South Ethiopia Know How to Manage Diabetes, but Drug Shortages and Costs Undercut Self-Care

This qualitative study examined diabetes self-care in three South Ethiopian hospital clinics. Its 21 participants comprised 12 adults with type 2 diabetes and nine healthcare providers. Patients described medication, diet, physical activity, foot care, and glucose monitoring as daily work negotiated against financial pressure, drug shortages, beliefs, food costs, limited support, and health-system constraints. Patients tended to foreground structural barriers, whereas providers placed more emphasis on knowledge and forgetting advice. Continued counselling, reliable medicines, and peer support emerged as priorities, but these are interview-derived design directions rather than tested interventions.

Perspectives on the forest bioeconomy: insights of stakeholders from cases in Central Europe and the Mekong region

This comparative study examines how 336 purposively recruited respondents in Czechia, Slovakia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam understand and assess the forest bioeconomy. Respondents generally reported stronger familiarity with sustainable forest management and the circular economy than with the bioeconomy itself. Perceptions also varied across country cases, particularly within the Mekong region. A binary logistic regression identified associations between high perceived implementation and country, age, education, understanding of policy aims, support for implementation and positive assessments of forest-industry implementation. These findings describe perceptions within the recruited sample rather than national populations, and the reported associations should not be interpreted as causal effects.

Zoonotic Risk in Rural Nan Is Not Just Behavioural: Water Scarcity, Forest Change, and Food Systems Connect Five Interfaces

Researchers examined everyday practices and conditions that could enable cross-species transmission in four rural villages in Nan Province, organising findings into five interfaces: human–animal, human–environment, human-human, animal–animal, and animal–environment. The picture is not simply one of deficient knowledge. Animal contact, butchering and food preparation, water scarcity and contamination, waste, forest change, intensified agriculture, mixed-species proximity, and multilingual communication operate as a system. Community leaders and village health volunteers were viewed as trusted messengers. The study therefore recommends education that combines knowledge, skills, practical tools, and recognition of structural limits, but it neither completed nor evaluated the final intervention.

Crustacean By-Products Hold High-Value Compounds, but ‘Green’ Extraction Still Lacks LCA and Industrial Proof

This review compares conventional acid–alkali and solvent extraction with supercritical fluids, enzymatic hydrolysis, pulsed electric fields, ultrasound, cold plasma, microwave, high-pressure processing, and deep eutectic solvents for recovering bioactives from crustacean by-products. No technology is universally optimal: conventional methods retain advantages in simplicity and maturity, while emerging methods may reduce chemicals or better preserve product quality but face equipment, cost, energy, reproducibility, and pilot-scale constraints. The paper is therefore a map of options and evidence gaps, not proof that one technology is the ‘most sustainable.’
