Biopolymer Films and Packaging72IMPACT SIGNAL
Laboratory materials evidence

Calcium alginate powder increased thermo-compressed sodium-alginate film strength by 208%

Seaweed-derived alginate is biodegradable and biocompatible, but sodium-alginate films are mechanically weak. With glycerol plasticizer, calcium-alginate powder at 2.5-20 wt% was added before thermo-compression. SEM/EDS indicated good interfaces and moisture declined with CA content. At 20 wt%, tensile strength reached 11.7 MPa and modulus 234.7 MPa, increases of 208% and 907% over unfilled SA, showing effective reinforcement by an ionically distinct alginate filler.

Biomass Fuels72IMPACT SIGNAL
Pilot-scale energy evidence

Pilot vibrating torrefaction upgraded Thai rubberwood and corn wastes to 22.4-MJ/kg fuel pellets

A pilot vibrating torrefaction system processed rubberwood- and corn-waste pellets at 220-300°C for 16 or 30 minutes. Greater severity increased HHV to 22.4 MJ/kg, about 20% above raw pellets, and improved grindability and moisture resistance, while mass and energy yields declined. Specific electricity use was 624-1,161 kWh per product tonne and preliminary cost THB 8,000-11,000/t including capital, feedstock and electricity, demonstrating both technical feasibility and economic tradeoffs.

Long-run econometric evidence

India's 1969-2023 data link nuclear energy and human capital with lower ecological pressure

The study integrates CO2 emissions, ecological footprint and load-capacity factor to represent emissions, resource demand and regenerative capacity in India. Annual 1969-2023 data were analyzed with ARDL bounds testing and robustness estimators including FMOLS, DOLS and canonical cointegration regression. Results supported Environmental Kuznets and Load Capacity curves. Nuclear energy and human capital were associated with improved long-run environmental performance, while economic growth and natural-gas consumption were associated with greater pressure.

Mechanisms and applications review

Postbiotics may be more stable than probiotics, but health evidence must remain product specific

Postbiotics are preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or components conferring a health benefit, while paraprobiotics often refer to inactivated cells. The review covers cell-wall fragments, metabolites and signaling molecules, proposed barrier, immune and microbiome mechanisms, and human and animal nutrition applications. Stability, storage and risks associated with live organisms may improve over probiotics, but heterogeneous strains and processing prevent class-wide efficacy claims.

Waste to Energy72IMPACT SIGNAL
Laboratory pyrolysis evidence

Pyrolysis converted waste-cooking-oil sludge into fuel fractions and biochar

Sludge from waste-cooking-oil pretreatment for biodiesel is organic-rich but low value. Pyrolysis separated it into liquid, gas and carbon-rich solid. Light, middle and heavy liquid cuts had higher heating values of 44.3-44.6 MJ/kg, while gas reached a 53.6 MJ/Nm3 Wobbe Index suitable for thermal applications. Higher temperature shifted yield from liquid to gas. Biochar retained energy and carbon-storage potential, but salinity and alkali constrain land use.

Functional Beverages72IMPACT SIGNAL
Food process and formulation evidence

Pectinase optimization prioritized bioactive recovery before developing a three-fruit beverage

Date juice was extracted with 0.1% pectinase at 50-80°C for 60-240 minutes. Fifty degrees for 60 minutes was selected for functional quality, yielding 326.33 mg GAE/100 mL phenolics, 1.08 mg beta-carotene equivalents/100 mL carotenoids and strong DPPH/FRAP activity, although maximum 81.25% yield occurred at 60°C for 240 minutes. Six simplex-lattice beverage blends were developed; the 70% date and 15% each of two companion fruits scored highest at 6.50. All blends improved measured bioactives versus control with stable pH and acidity.

Laboratory electrolyte evidence

Alginate-lignin raised ionic conductivity in a biobased gel electrolyte by nearly fourteenfold

A green gel polymer electrolyte combining sodium alginate, lignin and Na2SO4 was compositionally optimized. Conductivity reached 2.91×10^-4 S/cm versus 2.09×10^-5 S/cm in the baseline, about a 13.9-fold increase. Dielectric and electric-modulus analysis indicated shorter relaxation and improved carrier dynamics, ionic transference reached 0.98, and the stability window reached 2.85 V. Excess salt caused ion association and reduced transport.

Nanophotonics is converging with wearables, microfluidics and AI for point-of-care diagnostics

This review traces optical point-of-care biosensors from plasmonic materials, quantum dots, MOFs and MXenes that amplify signals and lower detection limits to integration with microfluidics, AI and the Internet of Medical Things. Discussed formats include lab-on-chip, hospital-on-chip, wearable, skin-embedded and tattoo sensors for continuous monitoring. Green nanotechnology and self-powered triboelectric systems are proposed to reduce energy and environmental burdens, while a large prototype-to-clinic gap remains.

Embedding physics in machine learning can make sensor-driven models more robust

Networked nanosensor data are high-dimensional, incomplete, noisy and nonlinear, challenging both first-principles and purely data-driven models. This review presents physics-informed supervised learning that embeds conservation laws, stochastic noise and network dynamics into regression and classification. It also covers cleaning, feature engineering, fusion, Kalman filtering, Fourier transforms and weighted-variance methods across environmental, biomedical and industrial cases, aiming to improve interpretability, robustness and generalization.

Viridian corrected pandemic-wide waves of systematic error across 4.47 million SARS-CoV-2 genomes

Most SARS-CoV-2 genomes were produced with tiled amplicons. Software unaware of primer schemes and error modes, together with outdated primers as variants evolved, generated systematic errors and false phylogenetic structure in waves. Viridian was developed for rigorous amplicon-aware reconstruction and applied to all public data through June 2024, producing high-quality consensus sequences and a global tree of 4,471,579 samples, supported by simulation and empirical validation and openly viewable online.

Thermoplastic composites improve recyclability, while long-term durability remains a bottleneck

Thermoplastic composites can be remelted and reshaped, offering better recycling and repair potential than thermosets. This review compares matrices, reinforcements and compression molding, thermoforming, automated tape placement and in-situ consolidation. Processing heat and pressure govern voids, crystallinity, interfaces and mechanical performance. Despite circular-economy potential, viscoelastic damage, fatigue, moisture, hygrothermal exposure and residual stress make service-life prediction difficult.

Associational modeling evidence

Perceived generative-AI transparency is linked to more responsible travel engagement

The study tested a cognitive-affective-behavioral sequence in AI-enabled smart urban destinations. Perceived AI transparency strongly related to digital reflexivity, which connected to place reinterpretation and AI-enabled co-creation. Co-creation related more strongly to ethical travel citizenship than reinterpretation, while ethical citizenship predicted post-travel AI engagement. Necessary Condition Analysis treated each construct as a prerequisite at some level, but these are modeled associations rather than experimental behavior change.
