Aging and Data Systems73IMPACT SIGNAL
Systematic landscape evidence

Asia is aging rapidly, but longitudinal data remain concentrated and poorly harmonized

The team mapped community-based longitudinal aging studies in East and Southeast Asia. Eligible cohorts followed community-dwelling adults with mean baseline age at least 50, were nationally representative or covered two geographic areas, focused on health and had English documentation. Thirty studies across ten countries or territories were found, concentrated in Japan, mainland China, Singapore and South Korea. Newer studies include biomarkers and performance measures, but physical frailty is rarely assessed, access is inconsistent and no multinational study met criteria.

MgZnFe-LDH removed arsenic and dye together, then repurposed the spent adsorbent for urea oxidation

TM-LDH/TZ was synthesized by co-precipitation and triazole grafting to remove As(V) and Congo red simultaneously at pH 5 and 25°C. Maximum Langmuir capacities were 204.75 mg/g for As(V) and 499.72 mg/g for dye. Kinetic models supported chemisorption and AMM analysis indicated spontaneous adsorption under tested conditions. The pollutant-loaded material then produced a UOR peak current density of 184.67 mA/cm², nearly twice the fresh material, with 1.19-ohm resistance and over 85% removal after three regeneration cycles.

Lancet Haematology Commission proposes ten actions for equitable blood-disorder care for women, with a Thai haematologist among the authors

The Lancet Haematology Commission on global female health and haematology draws on evidence from clinical care, research, public health, and policy to identify gaps that delay diagnosis or lead to inconsistent care for women and girls across menstruation, pregnancy, the postpartum period, and later life. Its ten proposed actions include faster diagnosis, screening for heavy menstrual bleeding and iron deficiency, stronger postpartum haemorrhage and thrombosis care, and equitable representation of women in research and clinical guidance.

Tb3+/Eu3+ phosphate glass approached commercial BGO spatial resolution for X-ray imaging

Phosphate glasses with fixed Tb2O3 and varying Eu2O3 were produced by melt quenching. XRD confirmed amorphous structure and FTIR identified bridging and non-bridging oxygen. Green Tb3+ and red Eu3+ emissions, together with lifetime behavior, supported Tb3+ to Eu3+ energy transfer. Orange-red chromaticity and 2,000-3,000 K correlated color temperature were observed. In scintillation testing, spatial resolution reached 11.6 LP/mm, close to 13.2 LP/mm for commercial BGO, suggesting potential in light emission and X-ray conversion.

Phase 3 survival evidence

Amivantamab-lazertinib improved survival in EGFR-mutated NSCLC but increased severe toxicity

MARIPOSA enrolled patients with locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC carrying EGFR exon 19 deletion or L858R. The amivantamab-lazertinib and osimertinib groups each included 429 participants. At 37.8 months median follow-up, the combination reduced the hazard of death to 0.75 and raised three-year survival from 51% to 60%. Grade 3 or worse adverse events occurred in 80% versus 52%, particularly skin toxicity, venous thromboembolism and infusion reactions, making this both a survival advance and a higher-burden treatment.

Two-dimensional FTIR and machine learning detected molecular signatures of cadmium exposure in fish

Clarias batrachus fingerlings were exposed to multiple cadmium levels and muscle tissue analyzed with FTIR, 2DCOS and PCMW2DCOS. Lipid disruption dominated around 0.8-1.9 ppm, early protein changes appeared at 0.4-1.2 ppm, and carbohydrate alterations at 3.2-4.5 ppm. Amide-I shifts from alpha helices to beta turns supported protein instability. PCA-LDA achieved 96% accuracy, 96% F-score and MCC 0.94; linear and polynomial SVMs were reported around 96-97%, suggesting earlier stress detection than conventional one-dimensional FTIR.

Laboratory food-science evidence

Fermentation improved alternative plant proteins and reduced antinutrients more consistently than boiling

Rice bran, bambara groundnut, moringa seed, mung bean, sesame and jack bean were compared with soybean after 72-hour fermentation near 25°C or 10-minute boiling at 100°C. Initial protein ranged from 14.98 to 30.29 g/100 g. Fermentation increased measured protein composition and solubility while reducing phytate and oxalate; boiling produced mixed solubility effects. Moringa seed and bambara groundnut showed composition and in-vitro digestion profiles that outperformed soy in selected measures, making them candidates for diversified plant-protein foods.

Global surveillance evidence

A 1.39-million-sample map of HIV-1 shows the diversity diagnostics and vaccines must keep pace with

The study assembled 1,395,222 HIV-1 subtype observations from 154 countries between 1990 and 2024 and weighted country estimates using UNAIDS numbers of people living with HIV. In 2020-24, subtype C represented 48.7% globally, followed by subtype A at 11.5% and subtype B at 10.3%. Unique and circulating recombinant forms were also substantial. Regional patterns differed sharply: subtype C dominated southern Africa and south Asia, CRF01_AE southeast Asia, and CRF07_BC increased in east Asia.

DESI DR2 hints at evolving dark energy, but the evidence remains inconclusive

The analysis combined DESI DR2 baryon acoustic oscillations with three Type Ia supernova compilations and a compressed CMB likelihood across eight dark-energy parameterizations. Several models favored the w0 > -1, wa < 0 region and crossed the phantom divide near z about 0.5. However, the preference was driven mainly by the limited LRG1-2 tracers. Mirage-model Bayes factors were only inconclusive to moderate, and no model was robustly preferred by late-time data alone.

Oxygen-vacancy engineering at Cu-Zn interfaces advances low-temperature methanol synthesis

Cu/ZnO catalysts for low-temperature methanol synthesis from CO2-containing syngas suffer activity and stability limits. Adding Ba regulated oxygen vacancies at Cu-Zn interfaces, reaching a TOF of 21.2 × 10^-3 s^-1 and methanol space-time yield of 655.17 g kgcat^-1 h^-1. Ba increased exposed Cu0 area, dispersion and basic sites while suppressing sintering. DFT supported interfacial oxygen vacancies as primary active sites.

Longitudinal aging data in Asia face funding, workforce and data-sharing bottlenecks

This qualitative study interviewed 33 stakeholders across 13 East and Southeast Asian countries and regions, with additional experts from India, the UK and US. Four themes emerged: structural and contextual barriers; local adaptation of design and logistics; funding and staff-retention threats; and governance, privacy and comparability constraints. Recommendations emphasize policy alignment, multidisciplinary collaboration, harmonization and intentional inclusion of vulnerable populations.

Star Homes reduced malaria by 44% and also lowered diarrhea and respiratory infections in children

The trial evaluated the Star Home, a two-story design intended to be insect-proof, cleaner, cooler and smoke-free while providing water and sanitation. Households with children younger than 13 were cluster-randomized to 110 Star Homes or 513 traditional mud and thatched-roof homes. Over three years, children in Star Homes experienced 44% less malaria, 30% less diarrhea and 18% fewer acute respiratory infections; children younger than five also had better height-for-age. The findings support housing as a modifiable determinant of health rather than merely the setting in which disease occurs.
