Severe Pregnancy-Associated Acute Kidney Injury and Maternal Vulnerability

Electronic records covering 4,094,111 US pregnancies showed severe pregnancy-associated acute kidney injury rising from 9.0 to 27.6 per 10,000 pregnancies between 2012-2013 and the COVID-19 era. Pre-existing cardiometabolic vulnerability was associated with risk, but observational data cannot separate infection, access, testing, and secular trends.

Integrative hematological and transcriptomic analysis reveals monocyte alterations and molecular signatures of inflammatory-coagulation crosstalk in long COVID

A comparison of 21 people with long COVID and 24 asymptomatic controls found lower white-cell, monocyte, and platelet counts and longer APTT. Integrated with a separate public transcriptomic dataset, the findings support a proposed inflammation-coagulation model, but the small and non-identical datasets cannot establish mechanism.

Toxicological Assessment of Oligofructans Derived from Raw Sugar Fermentation by Bacillus subtilis TISTR 001 and Their Modulatory Effects on Rat Gut Microbiota

Thai researchers evaluated oligofructans produced from raw sugar using Bacillus subtilis TISTR 001. Rats showed no treatment-related mortality or toxicity at doses up to 2,000 mg/kg/day for 90 days, alongside reported shifts in gut microbial taxa. These are preclinical animal findings and do not establish human safety or benefit.

A Multi-Frequency SAR Framework for Methane Emission Estimation in Thai Rice Paddies

A GISTDA-led framework combines Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 radar with IPCC accounting to detect crop timing, classify water regimes, and estimate methane from irrigated rice in Thailand's central plain. Mean absolute error was 18.5 kg CH4/ha, but structural uncertainty in the IPCC Tier 1 emission factor exceeded all algorithmic errors combined.

Predictors of Early Recurrence and Survival Outcomes Following Curative Resection for Colorectal Liver Metastases and the Role of Salvage Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study

In a retrospective cohort of 109 patients undergoing liver resection for colorectal liver metastases, high tumor burden, major intraoperative blood loss, T3/T4 primary disease, and RAS mutation were associated with early recurrence. Selected patients undergoing salvage re-hepatectomy had favorable long-term survival, but small subgroups and strong selection bias prevent causal conclusions.

The Study of Efficacy and Safety of a Modified Chaihu Shugan San Formula in the Treatment of Insomnia Associated with Stress: A Pilot Clinical Evaluation

A 30-participant pre-post pilot reported lower sleep-quality and stress scores after four weeks of twice-daily modified Chaihu Shugan San, without clear liver or renal safety signals. Without randomization, a control group, or placebo, the study cannot separate the formula's effect from placebo, attention, or change over time.

Benefits of three consecutive sputum inductions using nebulized racemic salbutamol versus hypertonic saline in smear-negative or sputum-scarce pulmonary tuberculosis patients: a prospective randomized, double-blind study

In a randomized double-blind trial of 345 adults with suspected smear-negative or sputum-scarce pulmonary tuberculosis, three consecutive daily inductions with nebulized racemic salbutamol produced a higher combined smear-or-culture yield and fewer adverse events than 3% hypertonic saline. The single-center study evaluates specimen collection for diagnosis, not tuberculosis treatment outcomes.

ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI-APOPTOTIC ACTIVITIES OF MAKIANG FRUIT EXTRACT IN ARPE-19 CELLS EXPOSED TO GLUCOSE-INDUCED CELLULAR DAMAGE

A 95% ethanol makiang-fruit extract showed antioxidant activity and, when co-administered in 30 mM glucose-exposed ARPE-19 cells, the highest 200 microgram/mL dose increased viability by 15.4%, reduced ROS by 37.8%, and lowered caspase-9 and -3 activities.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, l-theanine and theophylline abolish high-glucose-induced renal cell senescence and subsequent epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibroblast activation via SIRT1/PGC-1α axis: Implications for diabetic kidney disease

High glucose induced senescence in proximal tubular cells, whose SASP-conditioned medium then triggered epithelial-mesenchymal transition in distal tubular cells and fibroblast activation. EGCG, L-theanine, and theophylline suppressed these effects while restoring SIRT1/PGC-1alpha signaling.

Curcumin Attenuates Breast Cancer Cell-induced Inflammasome Activation via the NOD-like receptor protein 3/Caspase-1/Interleukin-1β Axis

Breast-cancer-cell conditioned medium drove THP-1-derived macrophages toward a pro-inflammatory tumor-associated phenotype with higher IL-1beta, NLRP3, and caspase-1. Curcumin pretreatment reduced IL-1beta secretion, NLRP3 protein, and IL1B/CASP1 transcripts.

Inhibition of calpain-mediated BAX cleavage attenuates Japanese encephalitis virus-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells

In SH-SY5Y cells, Japanese encephalitis virus activated calpain to cleave BAX into p18 BAX, which moved to mitochondria and triggered cytochrome c, caspase-3, PARP cleavage, and apoptosis. The calpain inhibitor calpeptin attenuated these signals and improved cell viability.

Artificial neural network modelling using complete blood count for the early detection of black lung disease among Indonesian coal miner: A retrospective longitudinal study

Annual health data from 807 Indonesian coal miners followed from 2013-2021 showed 13.9% cumulative black-lung incidence. A complete-blood-count neural network and Cox model both identified eosinophils and monocytes as influential predictors.
