Combined indwelling pleural catheter with thoracoscopic talc poudrage for malignant pleural effusion management: a randomized non-inferiority trial

In a 38-patient randomised trial, thoracoscopic talc poudrage plus an indwelling pleural catheter achieved 89.5% 12-week pleurodesis versus 68.4% with talc alone and met the non-inferiority criterion. Median stay was one versus four days.

Lactobacillus acidophilus abolishes oxalate-mediated renal epithelial barrier disruption and calcium oxalate monohydrate crystal adhesion to renal epithelial cells

In a renal epithelial cell model, sodium oxalate disrupted barrier integrity, reduced ZO-1 and increased annexin A2-mediated crystal adhesion. Co-culture with Lactobacillus acidophilus prevented these changes and reduced oxalate in artificial urine.

Opportunistic Osteoporosis Screening from Routine Knee Radiographs Using a Multi-Stage CNN Framework with External Validation

A multi-stage framework used pretrained CNNs to extract knee-radiograph features and machine-learning classifiers to distinguish normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis. External testing exposed a gap between AUC and threshold performance, especially probability collapse for osteopenia, requiring recalibration and threshold adaptation.
