Membranous remodeling of basal infoldings in attenuated epithelial cells of dilated renal tubules under unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in adult mouse kidney.

Under unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in mouse kidneys, comparing proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts, the distal tubules exhibited the most pronounced dilation and epithelial attenuation. Basal infoldings, typically well-developed in normal distal tubule cells, were infrequently present. Instead, the cell base was predominantly covered by flat-contoured plasma membranes interspersed with clusters of palisade-aligned thin cytoplasmic processes. These processes resembled the mitochondria-free terminal portions of cytoplasmic processes normally enclosed by basal infolding membranes in normal distal tubule cells. Some process clusters were enclosed by internal extensions of adjacent flat-contoured membranes, forming process-containing membranous sacs partially open to the basal interstitial space. Similar membranous bodies were observed deep within the cells, with some opening to intercellular spaces through fusion with lateral cell membranes. These membrane modifications likely represent the morphological sequence of membrane dynamics, providing additional membranes to compensate for the increased basal surface area in dilated tubules. Similarly, the collecting ducts dilated with attenuated epithelia and the basal surfaces were covered by flat-contoured plasma membranes with sparse clusters of palisade-aligned processes, suggesting basal infoldings, which also serve as a membrane supply to basolateral surfaces in these cells. However, membranous sacs containing thin processes were less frequent in collecting duct cells, indicating a less extensive membrane remodeling process compared with distal tubule cells. Constitutive DUSP2 expression enhances lymphoid cell proliferation by activating CDK1 and promotes lymphomagenesis

DUSP2 is known as a nuclear dual-specificity phosphatase, highly restricted to immune cells. Its expression is induced by antigenic and mitogenic stimuli and has been implicated in immune cell differentiation and functions. However, its role in immune cell mitotic proliferation and hematologic malignancies has not been rigorously examined. Here, we show DUSP2 is highly expressed in human B-cell, T cell, and other hematologic malignancies. Ablating DUSP2 expression in lymphoma cell lines decreases growth and viability. In mice, transgenic Dusp2 expression promotes B-cell and T cell proliferation, and malignant transformation. Mechanistically, DUSP2 promotes cell cycle progression by activating CDK1 through dephosphorylation at inhibitory Tyr15 and Thr14, which is mediated not by its own phosphatase activity, but instead by a structural motif that recruits CDC25 phosphatases. This work reveals an unexpected oncogenic role for DUSP2 in lymphoid malignancies and the function of a structural motif, which represents an appealing target site for therapeutic intervention.

Influence of Alloy and Alloy Composition on Dendrite Formation and Electrochemical Performance in Aluminum Metal Batteries

Interfacial instability and sluggish kinetics of high-purity aluminum (Al) anodes remain major bottlenecks for rechargeable nonaqueous aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) to achieve high electrochemical performance. This study systematically evaluates the effects of alloying compositions on dendrite formation in commercial AA1235, AA3003, and AA8006 Al alloys as scalable, high-performance and low-cost anodes in chloroaluminate-based electrolyte AIBs. Comprehensive results demonstrate that the commercial Al alloys achieve superior cycling stability over pure Al metal benefited by leveraging a balanced intermetallic distribution that promotes uniform Al plating and suppresses vertical dendrite propagation. In contrast, high-purity Al exhibits limited long-life cycles due to its inhomogeneous native oxides. Our findings reveal that tailored commercial alloys can outperform their high-purity materials, offering a strategic pathway for durable and cost-effective energy storage based on multivalent metal-ion chemistries.

Adolescent sexual and reproductive health assessment in clinical practice in India: a qualitative study triangulating clinician practices and young adults’ experiences

OBJECTIVES: To characterise current practices in adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) assessment during routine clinical encounters in a tertiary care setting and to triangulate these findings with young adults' experiences of adolescent healthcare, identifying gaps between recommended assessment approaches and real-world clinical practice. DESIGN: Qualitative study using semistructured in-depth interviews (IDIs) and group discussions with clinicians, followed by a sequential triangulation phase involving IDIs with young adults. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. SETTING: A tertiary care hospital in South Karnataka, India. PARTICIPANTS: 33 clinicians across six departments participated in four IDIs and five group discussions (focus-group or small-group discussions). 10 undergraduate young adults were recruited for IDIs in the triangulation phase. Sampling was guided by the information power principle. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Current patterns and practices of SRH assessment, perceived barriers and challenges and concordance between clinician-reported practices and young adults' experiences of care. RESULTS: Three domains emerged: current assessment practices, contextual challenges and improvement strategies. SRH assessment was largely symptom-driven and reactive rather than routinely integrated into consultations. Clinicians described practices shaped by sociocultural stigma, parental presence, privacy limitations and medicolegal uncertainty. In response, many relied on informal strategies such as rapport-building, indirect questioning or referral pathways. A biosecurity baseline for transboundary management of marine biological invasions in the ROPME Sea Area

Marine and brackish-water ecosystems are increasingly degraded by cumulative human pressures, with biological invasions representing a major driver of biodiversity loss, ecosystem disruption, and socio-economic impacts. Effective management requires regionally harmonised and scientifically robust baselines capable of supporting coordinated transboundary decision-making. Here we present the first consolidated marine biosecurity baseline for the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) Sea Area, a transboundary region characterised by extreme environmental conditions and increasing biosecurity pressure. A total of 192 species (123 extant and 69 horizon), including birds, fishes, tunicates, invertebrates, plants, and chromists, were systematically reviewed, taxonomically validated, and cross-checked against major databases and Member State inputs. Re-evaluation of a previous regional screening resulted in 24 species (≈18%) requiring status correction or exclusion. The resulting consolidated inventory comprised 130 validated retained species supplemented by 62 additional taxa. Extant species were classified according to biogeographic origin and impact status, whereas horizon species were evaluated based on introduction pathways, environmental suitability, and projected climate trends. Risk screening under current and projected climate conditions identified 39 extant species as very high risk, providing an operational basis for progression to full risk assessment and coordinated regional biosecurity management.

One Health surveillance of Lassa fever in Oyo State, Nigeri

Introduction: Lassa fever (LF) is a severe viral haemorrhagic disease caused by Lassa virus (LASV) and remains endemic in Nigeria, where it is associated with recurrent outbreaks, substantial morbidity, and high mortality. The persistence of LF is driven by weak surveillance systems, limited diagnostic capacity, poor health-seeking behaviour, and complex interactions at the human–rodent–environment interface. In endemic settings, these factors contribute to under-detection of cases and sustained transmission. This study adopted a One Health-informed approach to assess the sero-molecular prevalence of LASV in humans, evaluate viral detection in rodents recovered following bait-based deratization activities and examine the influence of meteorological factors on LF occurrence in Oyo State, Nigeria. Methods: Between January 2022 and April 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted across selected high-risk LGAs in Oyo State. Blood samples (n = 289) were collected from febrile patients and screened for LASV using RT-qPCR and IgM/IgG ELISA. Rodents (n=30) were recovered in Iwajowa LGA, they were morphologically identified and tested for LASV using RT-qPCR. Meteorological data were obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to evaluate associations between climatic variables and LF occurrence. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlation analysis. Results: The overall LASV seroprevalence was 11.1% (32/289), comprising IgM positivity in 9.7%, IgG positivity in 4.8%, and dual IgM/IgG positivity in 3.5% of participants; three samples (1.0%) were confirmed positive by RT-qPCR. Embracing Grief: Understanding Perinatal Guilt, Shame, and Coping Behaviours After Miscarriages

Background: Miscarriages can lead to profound psychological distress, particularly in culturally sensitive settings like Pakistan, where motherhood is highly valued. Women often face stigma, self-blame, and isolation, intensifying feelings of guilt and shame, which profoundly influence their psychological well-being and coping mechanisms. Objectives: To examine the effects of guilt, shame, and coping behaviour among women after miscarriages in Pakistan. The study aims to provide valuable insights into factors associated with perinatal mental health. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional survey design and a purposive sampling technique. Online surveys were conducted from 139 women (aged 18-55) who had experienced at least one miscarriage. The sample size was calculated using the sample size calculator by Raosoft, Inc. Women with a history of mental illness before miscarriage were excluded from the study. Data were collected through an Urdu questionnaire comprising a demographic information sheet, the 8-item State Shame and Guilt Scale (SSGS-8), and the Brief-COPE inventory. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using the statistical software SPSS 27. Results: The study found that guilt and shame are significant positive correlates and predictors of each other among women who have had at least one miscarriage. Guilt negatively affected problem-focused and emotion-focused coping. Problem-focused coping was more common among older women and those who had experienced more miscarriages. Significant differences in coping strategies were found between women who experienced emotional problems after a miscarriage and those who did not. Tin Dichalcogenides as Bifunctional Catalysts for Electrochemical Water Splitting in an Alkaline–Saline Medium

Electrochemical water splitting stands out as a viable method for generating sustainable hydrogen to address the energy needs of the future. This study evaluates mechanochemically synthesized tin dichalcogenides SnSe 2 and SnS 2 as bifunctional electrocatalysts. SnSe 2 and SnS 2 modified nickel foam (NF) electrodes show overpotential values of 378 and 307 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction and 124 and 103 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Further, SnS 2 was tested in a symmetric two-electrode configuration, SnS 2 /NF||SnS 2 /NF, which delivers an overall cell voltage of 1.677 V at 10 mA cm −2 and stability over 35 h at 20 mA cm −2 . The findings highlight the promise of mechanochemically synthesized SnS 2 as an economical and effective bifunctional electrocatalyst for electrochemical water splitting. To explore the relevant performance in saline conditions, alkaline–saline model electrolytes are considered, wherein 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 M NaCl + 1 M KOH electrolytes were tested, revealing that 1 M NaCl + 1 M KOH yields lower OER and HER overpotential values of 334 and 125 mV, and the SnS 2 /NF||SnS 2 /NF cell remained stable over 35 h.

Factors predicting medication adherence among family caregivers of people with schizophrenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A hospital-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence remains a significant challenge among people with schizophrenia, particularly those having comorbidity with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) due to complex treatment regimens and long-term care demands. Family caregivers play a central role in medication management; however, evidence regarding how caregiver-related factors influence medication adherence is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the factors predicting medication adherence among family caregivers of people with schizophrenia and T2DM. METHOD: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 530 family caregivers of people with schizophrenia and T2DM receiving outpatient psychiatric services in seven provinces in Northeastern Thailand. Data were collected using validated questionnaires assessing sociodemographic characteristics, caregiver-related psychosocial factors, and medication adherence. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors predicting medication adherence, with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: The final model explained 41.0% of the variance in medication adherence. Higher caregiver mental health literacy (MHL) and access to health information via the internet were positively associated with medication adherence, whereas higher family caregiver income and sense of coherence were negatively associated with medication adherence. CONCLUSIONS: Medication adherence among people with schizophrenia and T2DM was associated with family caregiver-related psychosocial and socioeconomic factors. Proteomic profiling reveals mitochondrial metabolic alterations in dexamethasone-induced neuronal differentiation

ObjectiveAs an in vitro model of catecholaminergic neurons, Cath.a Differentiated cells or CAD cells have been selected because of their direct origin in the mouse CNS and their ability to undergo inducible differentiation. Dexamethasone (DEX), a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, generates postmitotic and neurite-bearing CAD cells. Although the morphological differentiation of CAD cells induced by DEX has been well characterized, a comprehensive understanding of its proteomic profile and underlying pathways remains limited. Neuronal differentiation involves substantial remodeling of mitochondrial metabolic programs. However, the relationship between DEX-induced neuronal differentiation in CAD cells and mitochondrial metabolic state remains incompletely understood.MethodsIn this study, we applied a label-free quantitative SWATH-MS proteomic approach to investigate the protein expression in CAD cells upon differentiation.ResultsThe results of the proteomic analysis of 1,114 proteins associated with various GO terms, including neuronal differentiation and characteristics of brain-derived CAD cells, are shown. The data revealed the upregulation of proteins involved in mitochondria-associated metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation in DEX-differentiated cells compared with those in dividing cells, highlighting the role of mitochondrial metabolic changes during the neuronal differentiation of CAD cells. In addition, we identified proteins that were commonly expressed between the two neuronal differentiating protocols. International Implementation of ASIARS-Net for AMR Surveillance: Building on JANIS

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a narrative review of the history, characteristics, and progress of the ASIan Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (ASIARS-Net) system, an international web-based database system for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. METHODS: ASIARS-Net was compared with other surveillance platforms, particularly WHONET, a globally used AMR surveillance software supported by the World Health Organization, in terms of usability, AMR data analysis and outputs, and data management and integration, to clarify their complementary roles. The comparison was conducted based on experiences in countries that have implemented ASIARS-Net, enabling each participating country or hospital group to maintain a confidential database, process surveillance datasets from WHONET or Excel files, and generate national summaries and facility-level feedback reports. RESULTS: In Thailand, WHONET data from 74 hospitals covering 840,000 specimens, along with Excel data from three hospitals-each processing over 20,000 isolates annually-were processed to generate feedback reports tailored to user needs and to enable inter-hospital comparisons. In Vietnam, the use of ASIARS-Net together with WHONET or Excel is independently coordinated by laboratories. In 2024, eight hospitals successfully uploaded data and generated feedback reports, covering more than 140,000 bacterial isolates. Moreover, a nationwide clinical laboratory reported on more than 90,000 isolates collected during 2022-2024. These reports not only showed clear trends but also highlighted higher isolation and resistance rates of specific inpatient AMR pathogens in Vietnam than in Japan.
